Q. What's this mod all about? A. It's pretty simple. Hoppers can't transport items upwards. This mod adds ducts, which can attach to hoppers and send items in any direction. This mod also now adds Grated Hoppers, which can filter items.
Q. What's the difference between a hopper and a duct? A. A few things:
Ducts can send items into inventories above them.
Ducts won't pull items from inventories above them.
Ducts only have a single inventory slot.
Ducts can be pointed in a different direction after placing them by hitting them with a stick. Left-clicking with the stick cycles through all possible directions, right-clicking with it cycles in reverse. You can also shift-left-click with the stick to reverse if you prefer. When in creative mode, however, only right-clicking will be available, as left-click breaks blocks.
Ducts auto-orient to adjacent ducts or hoppers. Hold the sneak key while placing to disable this behavior.
Ducts have smaller hitboxes, making it easier to reach blocks behind them.
Q. Then what's a Grated Hopper do? A. Grated Hoppers contain an extra row of items in their interface. This is the filter inventory. Only items matching this row are allowed into the hopper from a chest, hopper, or duct above it. The Grated Hopper will also only eject these particular items into its destination. Finally, it prevents a hopper beneath it from removing items matching the filter.
Items can still be inserted into the Grated Hopper from the sides and bottom which do not match the filter. This means that you can insert anything into a Grated Hopper, have it eject its matching items into its destination inventory, and then have regular hopper or Grated Hopper beneath it, pulling out the items which don't match the filter, to be directed elsewhere.
Q. What are the crafting recipes? A. Hopper Ducts are a reduced version of the hopper recipe:
Grated Hoppers are a shapeless recipe:

Modpacks:
You don't need to ask permission to include this mod in a modpack. However, I do prefer that you include a list of mods somewhere on your site/page/thread with a link back to this forum thread, in case someone wants to report a bug. And while it's not necessary, I would appreciate you letting me know that you're putting it in your pack, and maybe a little about your pack if it's themed in some particular way. That way if someone asks for pack suggestions to try any of my mods, I'll know some to tell them!
Redistribution:
If you want to list my mod on other websites then you're free to do so as long as you use my download links, since I very much enjoy being able to see download statistics. I would ask as a courtesy that you use the Adf.ly link by default. Preferably include a link to this forum thread as well, so that people can not only report bugs, but find new versions. If you include donation links, then there's one below. If for some reason you can't use my download links in your situation, then you must obtain permission, which I'll probably grant if you have a reasonable excuse.
You do not have my permission to re-host any of my mods in a way that you collect ad revenue for yourself from the download. I'm specifically putting this here because I know there are some sites which are doing it. Mod makers don't spend hours coding for you to profit off of them for doing nothing.
This mod has some potential.Like some one else said ad in item filters or something like that. Or if you transporting over long distances add in gold ducts like the gold pipes from buildcraft that make your items move faster. Good start though.
Glad you folks like the mod. I figured that since a lot of people didn't know how, or wanted to go to the trouble, of compiling BuildCraft for 1.6.2 that they might appreciate a basic mod for sending items around.
Filters could be a good idea, especially given that the entire system will come to a halt if a receiving inventory doesn't allow a certain item.
As for the recipe, I might still change it later for balance. If ducts were a part of vanilla Minecraft, I could very well see them using a recipe of a hopper and a dropper to make them. But given how dirt cheap it is to make BuildCraft pipes, I wanted to try to balance the cost between the two. The next version might end up replacing the bottom piece of iron with a dropper though, primarily because it's a somewhat more intuitive recipe.

I have to disagree, I think the recipe is fine except you should replace the wood plank with redstone dust.
It's understandable if buildcraft/whatever is installed, but alone I think it should be either 1 or 2 per craft. Maybe you could add a config and let people decide what amount is reasonable.
Yeah I already decided that it's probably a good idea to at least let people configure the output amount. So that'll be in the next one.
I thought there might be some bugs to fix, which is part of why I haven't moved on to releasing any new features yet. But nobody's reported anything wonky yet. So far so good!
I dropped it into a 1.5.2 dev environment and compiled with fingers crossed, but no go. Even for a simpler mod like this the differences between these versions could mean significant code changes. If I get the spare time to look into more, or if enough people requested it, I might do the backport. I know a lot of people are still sticking with 1.5 for now and all.
For those of you who wanted a backport of the mod to 1.5.2, I finally got around to doing that, which actually wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. Download link in the initial post. Just let me know if it has any problems, since I might have missed something related to the version differences.
I have a request for this mod that I hope you implement. Could you add a config for the cool down time before item can be transferred? It would be nice because having a lot of these in your server can cause some performance issues. Thank you!
you could make a gold(already said by Hikachan), diamond and emerald hoppers
It's all good ideas. The reason I haven't moved towards making different kinds of hoppers for filtering and stuff though is because I think I saw a mod recently where somebody already did it. I found it by accident the first time, but haven't found it again since, partially because I can't remember what it was called. So I mostly want to confirm whether somebody else already made better hoppers before I step on anybody's toes.
Well these are my ideas, and you will probably say, why dont you use buildcraft instead?
because i've been playing with buildcraft since modding came around im a bit sick of playing with the same stuff getting the same result, time to change and your mod really helps!
I totally agree. We might get new versions of Minecraft and mods but there's a point where you get tired of doing the same'ol things.
Plus, I wanted a simple item transport mod I could use when all the big mods were busy updating to new Minecraft versions.

It sounded like a practical request so I just added it to version 1.1. I'll put the download links on the main post shortly.
The code is fairly simplistic compared to something like a BuildCraft pipe, I'd hoped there wouldn't be much of a performance hit. So I'm curious what you mean by "a lot" of them, which might help me in possibly optimizing the code. If the cooldown change doesn't help, then it might be in the rendering, particularly if you have lots of block updates happening nearby.

I sat a hopper down here in case you accidentally drop any money nearby.

I've been hoping for an "upward" hopper since they came out. The Hopper/Dropper elevator was irritating..
Thanks a lot
PS: for sorting systems it was realy annoying to hear the perm-tick-tick of the droppers
