So I'm having a little trouble installing this and I don't know what I'm doing wrong :S
I drag the class file into my 1.7.2 folder, delete META-INF and then log on to a server to test if it works and it just doesn't. I'm fairly certain that's all I did last time when I installed this for the first time with 1.6.4 but for some reason now it just doesn't want to store the logs.
I've double checked that I'm using the 1.7.2 version on the profile I have and Minecraft loads up normally without any problems. It just doesn't create the Chatlogs folder like it should.
Would I have to delete the existing ChatLog.properties file that is in my config folder?
It sounds like your problem has something to do with the way the launcher looks for updates to the Minecraft versions. If you're trying to just install it in 1.7.2 and deleting META-INF, it probably won't work. You have to create a new game profile for modded Minecraft, instructions can be found here on Minecraft Wiki. No need to delete any existing files from ChatLog, for instance the config file.
I was going to write a topic explaining why this happened, but haven't had the time yet. The launcher calculates what is known as the checksum of the Minecraft jar file. Think of it as a map seed - if the jar hasn't changed, the checksum will always be the same. However, if it changes, you'll get a different checksum. Now, if the launcher realizes that the checksum it calculates doesn't match the one it gets from Minecraft's servers, it will realize that the two files are different and will re-download the jar file from Minecraft's servers. For all the launcher knows, your version could be corrupt. Any change to the jar file will make for a different checksum. So installing mods in your jar basically makes your launcher think the jar file is corrupt, and it downloads a new, fresh one.

Ahhh thankyou! The guide on the wiki helped me sort it out. Installing mods is such a pain now
Indeed it is The easiest way to mod Minecraft now is with Forge. However, the documentation for Forge is poor on the field I need to work on, so I can't easily port it over. :/

Just to add an update to this: A Forge version has been made. An auto-installer is in the works. Installation is going to be a lot easier soon.

Open a terminal/command line window. In Windows, do this by searching for cmd in start menu. Then, enter these commands:
cd "C:\path\to\where\installer\is\located"
java -jar ChatLogInstaller-1.7.2-v1.3.3.jar
Remember to enter the path to where the installer is located in the first line of code, e.g. C:\Users\user\Downloads. If everything works fine, the installer should open. Do what you did when the installer failed, and you should see an error message in the command line window. Copy this entire error message, or screenshot it if you can't copy. Give it to me, and I'll see if I can solve your problem.

Okay, so basically the server was bugged and refused to upload the mod file. This happened seems to have happened specifically on Windows computers, so I (running Linux) was unable to see it happen. I've fixed the bug, and also tweaked the installer to make up for the changes done. Please re-download the installer, and ChatLog should install just fine

Well now i cant open the game
Does it add the files from the installer?
Nope, it downloads the files from a download server. Can you confirm that you downloaded the mod for the proper version of Minecraft? If you did, how did you install it? If you installed it in an existing mod profile, which other mods were installed?

I use most of the few 1.7.2 mods and i installed it to an existing one. And yes im sure it was for 1.7.2.
There shouldn't be any conflicts, so I'm not sure what causes it. Can you check if any of the other mods you installed has a file called bao.class? If one of them has it, then that mod and ChatLog is incompatible. To resolve it, just copy the bao.class from the other mod over to the jar file. (This will remove ChatLog, but make your Minecraft work again, hopefully.)
