There are already two health bar mods flating around. Ones with CJB's mods and another floating around somewhere I don't recall the name of it. Both are not updated yet I know for sure, as they use modloader and thats not updated yet. (as of this post!)
Sorry guys, I have a bit of bad news, I learned from the guys over at forge that Minecraft never sends packets to players about the exact damage inflicted on other entities, meaning, this could never be a clientside mod ( The server or buddy over lan must be running the mod in order to get the necessary packets to know how much damage something took.
Mod Updated. No more particle effect anomalies to other Minecraft systems, and the consequent anomalies affecting the coloring of my particle effects on some video cards has been reduced. Server now fully supported. Both PaintMod and Damage Indicators run side by side on dedicated servers with no currently known issues. Version incremented to 1.0.3, you need to update for compatibility.
Critical hotfix added, no compatibility lost. If your server has lag issues, re-download The hotfix also includes a config file that you can set the distance that one can still receive damage indicators from the mobs. Defaults to what I would recommend, 50. Set it lower if you plan on high population.
Edit: Z-Buffer fixed, will be in next release(so numbers are always visible and don't get blocked by mob movement and obstacles.)
Here is a teaser for what is coming in the next release, it is the future config file
I don't know what all that means, but looks pretty amazing. So you can generate the fonts for the numbers from custom texture packs? A scale filter? This is gonna rock...
Version 1.0.5 released, 1.0.4 was a private release to test all the new features. Almost everything can be tweaked now, just check the config file. You can also use a custom texture pack to generate the font file for the digits. Yes there is a smoothing Scale-filter added too if you want to use it, just be careful mixing the scale filter with very high res texture packs. Post any bugs if you find them

This is so cool. I think you fixed the graphical bugs I was having, and I love how the numbers are now always visible, and they look like they are positioned better too. I was going to ask you to explain what the configuration settings do, but it looks like it automatically comments... so thanks in advance i guess.
I have a suggestion! Maybe the higher the damage, the deeper red the text! So like, an overkill 10 damage would be red, while a simple punch would be a green 1

I could add that as an option in the config, would just take a second. Currently you can set the text color anything you want, open up the config and see what you can already do.
[IDEA] How bout changing the colors of each weapon damage. For example, when you hit a mob with a wooden sword it gives a brown dmg #. Also, stone sword = gray text. Iron sword = white text. Diamond = cyan'ish text. Also, dmg effect for drink/splash potions. Like, poison = green. Regen = red. Etc. This will give a variation of colors and gives the mod a bit more effect rather than plain black. Just like an RPG game.

Um, great idea's, but this is just a show damage tweak, not anything fancy, and if the icons are black, you need to to first try getting the newest version, and if they are still black, it might be your video card. I had to use a pretty dirty hack to get my non-physical, generated at runtime, texture file to be used by my particle effect, but on all machines I have access to, the icons seem to be the color I have set them to.
That takes me to my last point, you can set the color yourself. In your minecraft directory, there is a config folder, with a config file in it for this mod. You can change almost any aspect of this mod to suit your needs.
Just goes to show you how quick people jump on the moment to criticize All those first posts were posted within the first 5 minutes while I was still assembling my thread. None of them even clicked my profile to see that I was obviously a legit modder. But this is the internet, so you should expect as much.
Sweet
Awesome

Sometimes, it's a bug. I am working on a fix. Some video cards are more effected than others.
Sure, put the DamageIndicators zip in your mods folder. If you want help installing forge, read or ask on the forge forum.
