Making a stone axe before doing any hunting and just using that is usually enough. Unless of course the user has really bad aim.
I hate it that the axes break in like 3 swings. So yea, i just punch them to death. Although, havent tried hardcore fisting yet so that might change the experience.

It should only break in ~3 swings if you spam it. You should be able to kill several cows with it before it breaks and each cow takes 3 hits to kill. Critical hits kill even faster.
Okay, I love this mod. I played it way back when before my computer imploded and never had any real problems, other than me trying to frankenstein too many mods together.
Now, I'm trying to play it again. And I can't get it to work. I've tried several different ways over and over and over with the same results, except for one time the game started straight away and I spent twenty minutes murdering grass trying to find hemp seeds before realizing that, somehow, despite going through a bunch of steps to install the mod, the game was running in vanilla still.
I've copied everything in order modding the old fashion way, following the directions exactly, repeatedly. I've tried doing it by not following the steps exactly and moving stuff around, in other orders, what have you, and still nothing. I've used MCpatcher to try and simplify the process, repeatedly. I've used old versions of minecraft, old versions of modloader, old versions of the mod itself thinking that maybe there was a slightly new and incompatible version of something that just wasn't working. All I get is the black screen of 'go ahead and wait an hour, maybe it will load after all' with no exceptions.
Is there a new/wrong version somewhere in the install guide? Is the 1.5.1 BTW mod not working with the, apparently new, 1.5.2 minecraft? Does having windows 8 throw a wrench in? Am I suffering a gypsie curse?
I could really use a hand here.
Also, here's an error log from pressing the test button in MCpatcher 3.0.4 when I follow the directions from a force update clean install, using all the files in the BTW wiki install guide.

You'll need to downgrade to minecraft 1.5.1 and an appropriate modloader version. This thread on the BTW forums has all the information you'll need.
Try to actually play, think about what you're doing and what's getting you killed, and adjust your style to fit the changes instead of running around like a lunatic thinking you're playing vanilla, and you may be surprised at how much fun you wind up having.
The progression is now designed so that the most reasonable time to try and find a populated village is *after* you gain access to the nether. If you're trying to run straight for one at the start, you really aren't thinking about how to survive under the new conditions. They're in no way required in order to survive, they just act as a means to upgrade your food sources in the later game.
I hate it that the axes break in like 3 swings. So yea, i just punch them to death. Although, havent tried hardcore fisting yet so that might change the experience.
If I remember correctly, you can get 20 or 40 hits out of a stone axe on mobs before it breaks, so yeah...you're doing something messed up there like click spamming the mobs as mentioned above.
unless it's been changed in BTW, swinging at a mob while it's red and recovering from damage does no further damage but still uses weapon durability. spam clicking isn't the best idea with a stone axe
I am pretty much used to deal with early game struggles, even trying to make a furnace will cause you to die before you run out of hunger let alone trying to kill animals that all scatter now straight lines away from you, whatever, this mod is not fun anymore.
The reason why difficulty was increased was in order to make the game challenging, but also more rewarding. If the early-game is too hard you can turn some of the options off in the config, or maybe this just isn't the mod for you, but I really think you just need some time to get used to the changes. I find that the changes make the game a lot more interesting. Anyways, FlowerChild has stated that he believes that the next update will be the last to alter the early-game in the direction of more difficulty, and that, after that, he will be focusing more on end-game and specifically on HC Villagers, so there shouldn't be too much more to get used to.

I don't even play vanilla so really that elitist attitude is not going to work on me.
If you want to go for reality here the human species does not starve in 1 single day night cycle

Realism isn't involved. Seriously man, you aren't considering your options, or playing accordingly. You're just complaining reflexively based on a lack of understanding of how the game works.
For example, if animals run away when you try to repeatedly punch them, perhaps you should make a weapon like an axe? If you're starving too quickly, maybe you should consider conserving your energy instead of sprinting and jumping everywhere?
There are in-game solutions to each of your in-game problems, but you seem opposed to even trying to look for them. Will I take complaints that stem from that seriously? Of course not. That isn't elitism, that's just common sense.

I actually had an Iron sword which I think I got 6 hits out of.
I have played this mod in the past and expect difficulty, but the hunger thing is out of control.

No, it's not. You're just really bad at it and totally opposed to finding ways to resolve that or let anyone here actually help you. As an example, an iron sword lasts for about 500 hits, so yeah, a big "whatever" to you approaching this constructively.
Given that, there's really nothing I can do to aid you further, so have fun flying around and skipping one of the most interesting parts of the game.
I actually had an Iron sword which I think I got 6 hits out of.
There's no way, absolutely no way. FlowerChild doubled the durability of iron tools when he reduced that of wooden and stone tools. I think you're either exaggerating or making presumptions without actually testing them. It's possible that you're not getting as much durability as intended if you, like many non-BTW players who have never worried about the shortage of resources needed to make swords, have been spam-clicking to kill things. This wastes massive durability. I was curious and once tested this: spam-clicking results infour wasted durability on a sword for every one truly used durability. So don't spam click. This is just one little thing you would need to know to succeed in the early game of BTW.
@Holy_shield: And to add to what Vexalor said. so you starved while building up to a stone pick, caving and mining until you found 18 iron ore, and then built a furnace and smelted the ore then crafting the ingots followed by the sword itself before you finally succumbed?
Hello, I dont know what happens with forge drama, but something is true, better than wolves is not the best MOD, cause all functionality of BTW should be implemanted in Minecraft, it's more the logic continue of minecraft, other mods give funny other way to play. When btw is just what mojang should do. My english is bad so i hope you understand me.
Flowerchild, i have one thing, i suppose you dont hear that for the first time but anyway, you make a lot to make the game harder, do u think in the futur you will do different difficult mod ?
Sorry again for my english, I dont understand myself too X)

Sorry if the hyperbole caused any confusion. When i use axes to kill stuff it definitely feels like 3 swings. WIth the new durability of stone pickaxes, it just feels like i have to do a ton of work for my porkchop. I find digging a hole and punching them is a far more food- and material-efficient way.
Try to actually play, think about what you're doing and what's getting you killed, and adjust your style
Y'know, this is just generally good advice, peroid. Works for any game. Heck, it works even in real life if you changed it from "getting you killed" to "causing you problems".
I'd suggest adding it to the first post but a) suggestion, and b ) I don't think they read it anyways :C

Unless it changed from 4.80 to 4.81, it should be 25 for a brand-new stone axe. It definitely cuts fifty wood, so it should be twenty-five for ani-meals. Er, animals. It's an "off-purpose" use for it, unlike the Battle Axe, right?
Aah, there's nothing quite like hunting withers in full plate with a nice Smite V battle-axe.. I need to update to 4.81 and get some quality BTW time in! Damn work, eating up all my free time..
EDIT: Stupid smiley interpreter attacked "b" and ")" :C

Yeah...that's the thing man. Two years experience at this has taught me that the people that would benefit most from reading the OP are the ones least likely to do so
