Glad this is Mac-native and Mac-only. It's annoying to get something that's "for Mac" but uses Java or Python or makes you compile it then gives you a really bad interface in the end.

Hello! Yesterday the official release 1.7 update went live, and it seems to have broken MCMap Live. It displays only one out of every fifty or so chunks loaded in the game. I suspect that the new tree and flower types make displaying a chunk containing them impossible. Will there be an update to fix this? MCMap Live is my favorite minecraft mapper and I would love to use it with the awesome new Minecraft 1.7!
I now have a fix for this in my own local fork, maybe I should have updated to the latest code first. Basically, for the tagList, a position of 0 (zero) is now valid and should be processed in the same way as all others...
I just forked, edited nbt.cpp and submitted a pull request. we'll see...
Please oh please make it work with 1.7.2! All I see are tiny bits of scattered world. :c
Simple fix is to get the latest mcmap binary for mac ( download source and compile it ) then replace it in the application. I got it working just fine with that. Steps are roughly:
1) download mcmap 'all platforms' v2.4.2 from http://blog.wrim.pl/mcmap/
2) unzip it
3) Make sure the developer tools are installed on your mac and up to date (http://guide.macports.org/chunked/installing.xcode.html)
4) cd to the directory created in #2 and type 'make' in the terminal
5) copy the file 'mcmap' into the resources folder MC Map Live app replacing the one that is there.
something like: cp ./mcmap /Applications/MCMap\ Live.app/Contents/Resources/mcmap6

So, this didn't work. After running "make" I get two warnings and a fatal error... "draw_png.cpp:12:10: fatal error: 'png.h' file not found". And there are two "mcmap" files, mcmap.vcproj and mcmap.sln, both there from the zip file.
Yes, that's what I did (and also using 1.5.5). The app you just posted runs but stays at the "white boxes" stage of loading, never drawing any terrain. Maybe it's not compatible with OSX 10.7.5?
5) unzipped the mcmap source code from step 2, and did make on the command line
6) the new mcmap binary created from step 5 I copied into the MCMap Live for 1.7.2.app/Contents/Resource/ directory replacing the existing one.
Now it works like a charm. I think to get Bob's to work you just need to install the libpng from step 3 (speculation). It appears that mcmap is dynamically linked to the libpng library while the original mcmap in the MCMap Live 1.5.5 app is statically linked.
Thanks everyone for all your clues to figure this out.
Before I go mucking around modifying apps (which I have no business doing!) is it a given that the original author will no longer be updating the app? Or is he just on a hiatus to return later?
Followed the instructions in McGrude's post (installing libpng before replacing mcmap in the /resources directory), but MCMap Live still crashed upon attempting to load a world. Here is the crash report (on pastebin): MCMap Live Crash Report - dec 15, 2013
I hope this helps someone else! For now I think I'm going to have to give up on MCMap Live - it is hands-down my favorite Minecraft mapper ever, but I just can't get it to work anymore. Many thanks to Donkey Kong, Zahl, Voikya and the people still on here updating the application on their own! Good luck!
@MagpieTear: Make a copy of the application before you modify it! No word on when or if the application's official authors will be returning, as far as I know.
I was able to get it working by installing the version bobotheclown posted above, along with the combo installer thing McGrude linked to. I tried a number of the other ideas with no luck and various types of failure, but with these specific 2 steps it seems to work. Thanks!
Many Thanks to bobothecown-gti and McGrude! After installing the libpng and hobo's update, I have working maps again! And it made me realize I tunneled about a kilometer further than I needed to.
Just wanted to let you all know, I am planning on releasing an updated version. I'd like to use WRIM's updated mcmap binary, and just want to make sure it's okay with them to package it in first.
And thanks to bobothecown-gti and McGrude for picking up the slack and helping folks while I've been away!
Nor does it detect my twilight forest.
In each case, I have to copy level.dat into that directory, and open the directory, to see the map.

Help?
I use the ports utility to keep stuff like that around:
http://www.macports.org
Once you have mac ports installed you can just type 'sudo ports install libpng'.
My son and I are having lots of fun with the new horses on my old server. Needed the maps to figure out where to start looking for horse spawns.
1) I downloaded bobotheclown_gti's http://www.mediafire.com/download/jpvteddwwlh52t5/MCMap Live for 1.7.2.zip linked in post 521 above.
2) I downloaded mcmap v2.4.2b source from http://blog.wrim.pl/mcmap/
3) I downloaded libpng (and libjpg) from here (combo installer) http://ethan.tira-thompson.com/Mac_OS_X_Ports.html
4) I installed the package from step 3.
5) unzipped the mcmap source code from step 2, and did make on the command line
