After the tiling problem is fixed I think you should use the same technique used on the left tile.
The shading and contrast are way better and more in-line with the other tiles.
The birch log looks just fine, enough contrast with the rest of the logs anyway.

I see what you mean. Although I hate to beak it to you, but they both tile rather badly. See the dark, vertical zigzag lines in the one on the right?
