If you've ever tried to make a texture pack, you likely know the golden rule:
Never, ever, use MS paint.
I now invite you, ladies and gentlemen, to defy that rule. I challenge you all to make the absolute best texture pack you can, using only the default colors of MS Paint.
Are you ready to claim the top spot as the master of color? Then click the link below to read the challenge thread!

About a week ago my computer monitor decided after 2 years it ha had enough, and stopped working. After calling my dad over he approved that the monitor, strangely enough, had broke, and said he would buy me a new one next weekend.
It is the weekend, and Dad is going to pick up a new monitor on his way home from work. So that I would not be mobbed by emails, messages, and thread replies, I log onto the forums via my laptop, to reply to someone derping about how he hated my map. When I reply, I notice my name is blue. Light blue. I look down, and I am a Premium User!
I ask myself, how did this happen? I certainly didnt buy it. They I 'member. When they were testing the new curse client for texture pack support, they said that packs which get 1000 downloads will get their maker curse premium! /me goes to check BukkitDev. Runeix has 1,200 downloads! It was at 983 on Mediafire last I checked, and less that 200 on Planet Minecraft, and before my monitor broke, 500 on Bukkitdev!
I am the happiest Robert everz.
/end
And that is the story of how being a texture artists got me free curse premium. (Well, if you dont count labor )
ive seen them before, its just the first time ive realized what a big challenge it actually is
Oh yeah, making a pack can be an awful lot of work. A big portion of the time investment depends on how quickly you can make a texture-- and how many tries it takes before you're satisfied. It used to take me upwards of 2 months to make a pack, but with experience I can now turn out a (relatively) simple one in a weekend. Part of my ability to do that has come from challenges, especially challenges with time limits. They really help the community to improve, and foster creativity.

that makes sense, actually. when i first started my pack, i was making maybe 1-2 textures a day, simple ones. i did over 40 stone textures before i got one i liked enough to keep, and i still dont care for it.
but now, i can do most textures pretty quickly. however, on occasion i do find that certain ones end up taking me 12-15 hours. but i make things insanely complicated.
i have plans for tons of packs once i finish this one though... perhaps ill get fast enough to make these.
128x (or higher) photography based pack. the theme will be decay. lichen, mold, moss, rust, peeling paint. things i really, really like to take macro shots of, but arent that interesting on their own.
16 or 32x - ****ed up happy land. the name is intentionally sloppy. it will basically be themed after a perfect suburban neighborhood with a dark undertone, and occasional gore. somewhat inspired by fallout 3's tranquility lane, provided you took the pint sized slasher route.
16x mostly grayscale pack that introduces color occasionally in very low saturation, but brightly colored lightmaps, sky, etc. basically making use of mcpatcher/optifine's custom colors.
so, i started on my cactus intending it to be a mechanically augmented plant. what i came up with however, ended up looking like a colony of mutant tube worms. should i make the spikes more metallic and attempt to salvage this texture, or start over?
i want this to be a more steampunk aspect. its about time my pack had some of those, since its a steampunk pack.
anyway, i also did log tops, finally.
rather than making some that worked for everything, i made some that looked neat and worked for none of the logs!

yep, they're permanently cracked. overdone?
that cactus is cool just a thought you should animate it so the spikes move in and out of the holes

Woo hoo! Now I am a double noob! And, I am a nerd... I guess that makes me a square noob squared!
(Also, I make bad jokes.)
Thank you tons for acceptance! As soon as I finish up my firsttexture pack I will contribute more in here. It is allllmost done, so it shouldn't be too long. I am thinking just in time for 1.4, which is perfect since it is already compatible (if the snapshots remain bug fixes...)

I just had an idea. What if we hosted a reality Minecraft show, like MasterChef or X Factor. Except, about texturing. So, it would be like MasterArist, or Texture Factor.
that seems a bit nuts... challanging someone to a texture pack. i mean, a texture pack is a 6 month project XD
You haven't been here long, have you? Challenges have been coming out our ears for months now.
Looks great! Nice color choices.
I accept your challenge, with my newfound self-respect from the following story which went ignored several pages ago!
I play Slave Hack, give it a try!
We had a challenge to make a texture pack in 6-hours a little while ago, and there were a lot of good submissions.

You should go enter this new one! *hint hint nudge nudge*
I might try to, I have a lot of Minecraft related things on my plate right now, oddly enough.

We'd be glad to have you if you decide to stop by. You'll surely stomp the competition.

yep. this will happen eventually, i hope.
In all seriousness, look up! Interesting story of the amazing feeling of success and confidence texturing has done for me!

I did read it, and I felt happy for you. I just didn't have anything to say except 'great for you!'. So I guess..... great for you! That's awesome!

I am after all sorts of feedback on the pack right now, which can be found here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1330039-tp-10-a-pack-without-a-name/
Again, thank you guys and I look forward to joining in!
Welcome!
Make the map more paperrrrrrrrrry... and make the potion rounder!
