I have the .mcmeta titled "iron_sword.png" as it is in 1.6.2, and I've done everything here, but it doesn't show the animation. No purple/black checkers here. Any help? If you need what it says, here it is:
{"animation":{
"frames": [
0,
1,
2,
3,
2,
1
]
}
}
EDIT: In properties, it's a .mcmeta file, but if I add .mcmeta to the file, it simply gives the evil purple and black checkered square, the bane of item animating existance :C

Interesting. There's nothing wrong with the code as far as I can tell. Of course, without seeing your animation strip it's impossible to tell for certain. I recommend going through the troubleshooting steps again.
It's interesting that it doesn't show the checkerboard. What does it show exactly?

I'm confused as to what you're saying. The file name should be "iron_sword.png.mcmeta" where the image is just "iron_sword.png". Only the file name needs to have .mcmeta tacked on the end. I'm not sure what you mean by it showing it in 'properties' if you haven't added this extension. Which program's properties?
Also, if you're a Windows user, make sure you have "show hidden file extensions" enabled.
Sorry I'm of little help. Everything you've posted is confusing.

Alright so this is what's going on
I look in the properties of the "iron_sword.png" file and under file type it is .mcmeta.
So basically...
No .mcmeta at the end of it: no animation
putting .mcmeta at the end of it: Purple and black squares
It's a 16x64 [4 frames]
If you want the pack itself, I can upload it to MediaFire
Do you happen to know how to make the first frame appear only once and have the rest loop? Thanks in advance.
This is neither possible nor practical. The animation starts when the world loads, so even if this were possible, the only time you'd see it is the split second after opening a world or logging into a server. Pretty pointless if you ask me.
I have exactly the same problem as EnderSlime. I've done all the code in Notepad++ correctly, and the item in game is not the purple and black checkers, but it's just an un-animated iron sword.
His problem ended up being that he had animations disabled in Optifine. Try checking on that.
Nice tutorial, but just for the record,
Where you say that it is annoying that programmers use the number 0 to start a list, that is wrong, programmers have to use it. I am a hardcore programmer myself, and if anything, the way lists are indexed does annoy me too. The designers of the languages implemented that feature solely for memory, and other issues (I don't fully know why). Just thought you would like to know the correct reason why lists start with the number 0.

I'm fully aware of why this is done, actually. Being aware doesn't really help us artsy types for being annoyed by it. Seriously, would it have killed someone at Mojang to put "+1" in there somewhere so things would be logical to the ones using the system?
A small typo in the 3rd IMPORTANT under changing frame order, My including a comma after the last frame, you're telling Minecraft that there's more frames... and then leaving it hanging. Minecraft is really picky when it comes to .mcmeta files, and adding that comma will cause the entire animation to fail, resulting in checkerboard blocks.
Where not mind readers nor can look into your screen. -show- us what you are trying to do so we can see what may be causing it to not work so we can help you fix it.
OK, well, you can either complain about it -or- you can show us what you've done, posting images and .mcmeta files here for us to inspect, and explain what you're trying to do so that we can help you.
ok first of all i create a Block(I'm Mod creator) then i set path to my mods folder and blocks folder and name exactly how i named in mod in my situation it is fancyBlock.png then i create txt file and save as blank fancyBlock.png.mcmeta(without .txt) then i add
{ "animation": { } }
to fancyBlock.png.mcmeta and launching minecraft(with my mod) block is there but there is no texture. WHAT i'm doing wrong?
Does it load if you use a square tile instead of an animation strip?
Also, please post your animation strip. Upload it to imgur (or the photo host of your choice) and give a link here.
Also, please use punctuation. It's really difficult to figure out what you're trying to say when I'm not sure where your thoughts end. Thanks.
Yea, this stupid system is entirely too touchy. Sometimes it just doesn't like the way you hit the Enter key.
Anyway, glad I could help.

I support BETTER DRAGONS!
Well, you can either post about how it doesn't work or you can post what you have and possibly get some help with it. Your choice.
