For me, pretty much anything that requires natural-looking randomized blobs (i.e. stone, dirt, netherrack etc.) It just takes so much effort and so many tries at redoing the outlines to get the shape looking just right.
wheat!! I spent 3 days on wheat!! probably 12-16 hours in total. I kept discovering things that I could add to the last couple of frames and so I had to keep go back and adjust the previous stages. over and over again.
Otherwise, in terms of being a horrible texture, I'd say redstone dust and overlay. Levers are pretty boring too, really wish the texture could extend outside of the default sprite.
Oh leaves. Oh how a nightmare it was to draw you. I really hated drawing the leaves texture mainly because of the amount of segments it needs in order for it to look good. And especially if you are like me, working on a 16x16 pack, you don't have much space to add those, I had to do a lot of tweeking on mine in order for it to look decent in looks and tiling.
Definitely lava for me. I didn't want it to just be warm-colored splotches like default, so I tried at least 6 different lavas until I settled on one I'm only "okay" with.
I've been told even now it looks like flowing orange plastic, but I guess that beats bubbling yellow noise eheheh
What i usually do is cheat myself and look up ACTUAL pictures of rock textures, resize it and make it look minecrafty. Works for my realistic pack
But i absolutely hate grass. Hardest texture for me
By the way, people who are having trouble with making it tilable download the demo of photoshop photoshop may seem hard at first but its easy once you get the hang of it

For the record, this is not a good technique to use. 1) Most of the time the result is terrible, and very obviously a resized google image, 2) you learn nothing and do not improve your artistic skills, 3) it may be against the law to use that picture snagged from google.

No im not saying use the actual picture. Let me refrase it. You resize it then use it as a guide to making the texture if youre making a realistic texture pack

That could still be construed to suggest use of the image from Google images, but I know what you mean: "resize the original image to a resolution equal or similar to your pack's native resolution, then get ideas, inspiration and general shading patterns from it to make your own original texture from scratch".
Although, you should also commonly attempt to make textures without the texture style given to you by Google images. I only used Google images references for the sunflower in Definitance, and I haven't used it for any other texture I've made, since I feel it restricts my creativity and then makes mine look worse since I am mentally comparing them. To me, reference images make it harder, with the exception of a few special cases, such as the sunflower.

I've used some references, I try to keep it minimal though. But there are some things I just couldn't figure out how to draw. For example, silly as it sounds, I tried for an hour to make a "teardrop" shape for my ghast tear.. I finally gave up and found a google image that was the right shape I wanted and tried to duplicate it.
Now, we're just talking the outline here (and I remade it myself, I just needed a reference). All the shading was my own work, I didn't shade it even remotely like the example I found.
There's been a few others I've google imaged before too, usually it's just oddball stuff I'm confused on how to get the details just right on. I think the last one was wheat, I was trying to look at other people's "cartoon style" wheat and figure out how to get all that detail (or, implied detail) in such a small space. I even looked at about 2 dozen texture pack's wheat trying to get design ideas.

..ugh.. stupid wheat. I hated that texture. :/
Shaddup. You're reminding me I need to do my wheat.
I haven't even tried wheat in my packs since Pixelation. I've never really had inspiration nor motivation to do that texture. I have that thought in the back of my mind that, if I attempt it, it will come out better than I expect (which wouldn't take much), but I never really felt like doing one texture... What is it? 10 times?
For yours, my only suggestion (from a complete wheat-novice's standpoint) would be to add some larger extensions/parts on the sides of a few of them so to have a bit more natural variation, and definitely adding something bigger to the top of the stalks so the thin, straight stalk doesn't just end, which would help with the straight line feel. It just seems too uniform at the moment, with all the side extensions being one of two lengths, and at vertical intervals the same in each stalk. Perhaps some random CTm for more extension and top variations in stalks as groups for the feeling of further individual variation? I know how you like CTm.

I know how to use a reference without feeling inferior to said reference: get a horrible reference, and improve it! Sure, that's kinda pointless, but whatever!
I've been fighting with these buggers for 2 days and finally started to get a design that may work. I don't know what Mojang was thinking, the default texture is so unnaturally-shaped. The bottom is a "bush" the top is a vine/stringy! ARGhahahaaa!!
Don't mind the roses on the left, The bushes on the right are the start of the "bottoms" of the doubletall bushes.. I may have to make both the top and bottom "bushes" because the idiotic way the top is drawn just makes no logical sense in my cartoony-world. :/
I seriously have no idea how I am going to draw the top anything even remotely close to "faithful", might just have to be like the bottom parts, just with holes in the bushes.. Hrm..
Mine were stone, grass and sand and netherrack, Especially Netherrack. All if this stuff is just very common so every tiling error gets very obvious. And also finding the right amount of structure is incredbly hard. It sould neither look bland nor hurt the eye. Tough to balanca out
Fire. Definitely fire. Since I have a relatively simple style, fire is a complete nightmare. I have tried like 10 times, all with differing amounts of success. None have made it into the pack.
Eurgh, fire. I cannot leave the default in my pack, and animating cartoony fire has become the bane of my existence.
I also really hate my cracked stone bricks. They're just... feh. In every way.
I'm considering banishing this texture to Alt Folder Purgatory and using the cracked stone as a way to have a second sort of stone brick entirely.
I've discovered since I posted this I hate drawing plants. I've been working hard on getting all the new 1.7 plants done in my pack, and it's really like pulling teeth. I redesign them 40-dozen-thousand times, never happy with the results... and I'm only about half done with the new flowers and such. :/
Doesn't help I have to draw 9 of every one of them too, I think that's what is getting me. I can make 1 look good, replicating 9 matching flowers/plants that all look the same, but different, is driving me crazy! Also for some reason I just don't have the drive/motivation to work on them.. it actually feels like "work".. ugh.
Can't wait until all these stupid plants are done and I can move on to other more fun textures.
Wheat and log sides are also quite annoying.

Did a bit of work on my cobble last night, and it is a major improvement over my other one, and it actually tiles very well. Thoughts?

Looks VERY similar to the default jungle log.
