So, what is this pack you might ask? Well, I started making this texture pack per request for mczeldafan, however I never had any intention for it to be a completed texture pack done by me alone. So that is why I come here to ask for help, from you, the artists. So what do you need to do? Well first you need to comment below and give a link to any previous texture packs you have worked on, you also need to include some blocks that you would like to work on. To get your work featured in this pack after you are finished you need to include a download link to the textures so I can include them in the files.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WHAT IS FINISHED?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well currently there are only 3 (4 if you count my crappy stone brick) finished. They will be included in a picture below), so as you can tell this is a major WIP.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What needs to be done?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well this is largely up to you guys, but however blocks that need to be completed before release are as follows:
- Vines
- Spruce Wood Planks
- Red flowers
- The sky
- The sun
- Stone
- Sand
- Bow (Needs to look like Booker's pistol)
- Fire
- Stone bricks
- Fire charge
- Water
- Iron Block
- Leaves
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Want to help?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, good, all you have to do is follow the instructions mentioned earlier in the post.
Thanks guys, hope we can turn this into a community project of sorts.
a.k.a you want other people to do the work for you.
These kind of ideas never work out, people have too vast of style to make much that looks good together.
I said almost that same thing verbatim a few days ago to another user.
It's very hard to make team project texture packs, there's too many art styles.. even if you somehow kept the same colors/flow, the art styles would all look funny together.
Personally though, if I was *forced* to work as a team and I was in charge, I would do this:
- 1 guy dedicated to GUI work
- 1 guy dedicated to items/inventory objects
- 1 guy for blocks
- 1 guy for mobs
- 1 guy for "misc" things like skies.
See what I did there? I kept the art talent from intermingling, assuming you all agree on a basic overall art theme like "Cartoony", "Dirty", "Gritty" or "Steampunkish" you could have multiple artists with varied styles but not have them mix up of each other's work too much. So, assuming they're all good artists, it might all come together and look good.
But, even having said that, I said if it was *forced*. I would never even consider such a thing, it's a bad idea. Assuming it all somehow works out, what do you do when your "Mob skin" guy quits halfway, or your GUI artist turns out to suck? ..or even worse, lets say you have 2 *great* artists but their work just doesn't work together? Who do you fire?
On top of all that is also time, good packs can take months to make. You'd be forced top wait for one person or more to have the free time in their lives to do it. If they even want to in their free time.
I know I work a full time job, and my free time I may not really want to mess with textures.. I may want to go out, watch a movie, or play another game. Not work on someone elses textures cause they want me to waste what free time I have for what they want.
On top of all that is also time, good packs can take months to make.
I think thats the biggest point right there, the pack I'm working on I've been working with pretty much all of my free time (I love it, so it's my major hobby right now). I think I started about 2 months ago, and I'm no where near done.
To my credit, I am making every texture with full CTM (random) support, so every block has 9 textures.. but once you get a design down for a block making the other 8 isn't *that* bad.
My point though is, my pack isn't in a state I'd expect people to use it yet, and it's already 2 months old.
Quality work takes a *lot* of time and dedication, and I wouldn't put this much time, dedication and love into someone Else's work.
a.k.a you want other people to do the work for you.
I expected to hear many things. This was not one of them. The community project idea might not work, then I will complete the pack myself. I don't appreciate you saying that because I chose to make a community project, you just assume I won't do most of the work myself. The only reason I don't do it myself is because the requester wanted to turn it into a community project.
Well sorry. But we see a LOT of topics like this around here, and most if not all are just people wanting others to do the work for them so they can then later take credit for 'making' it.

Look, the original idea for the pack was to create something that would be fun for role playing, building, and just for fun. We were certainly not thinking that we could get away with 1. stealing other people's creative works, and 2. saying that we(mainly Epic_Awesome1 but I plan on submitting some textures myself) created these works all on our own. Yes, it might not turn out "amazing" or "the new default" but at least it would be a fun texture pack for people to build and or play in.

Maybe it's just me, but if you don't expect good quality work why even bother doing it? A large scale half-ass'ed project is still a half-ass'ed project. :/
The only time it's worthwhile to do a project you know will turn out awful is if it helps improve your own abilities, but this won't if you're having other people do a large portion of the work. If you want to improve (and I'm pretty sure that isnt what this is about anyway) you should do the entire texture pack alone or as a duo since you're both already on board.

You know what, no, I'm done I'm not making it a community project seeing as you two are so against it. I'll do it myself.

Ok, that's fine with me. But this topic is going to be unused unless you use it as an update forum for the pack. Other wise this topic should be terminated. I'm sorta sad we couldn't make it a community project, but because of the complaints, I'd rather have people see the idea for what it is, and not try to take it on with hate.

My personal suggestion is if both of you feel you can work together, dedicate yourselves to different sections of the pack, like one of you do the GUI/Items while the other does block textures. Then, open up a new WIP thread somewhere.
I don't mean to turn your thread into a negative-fest, I just don't want to see people wasting their time with already disproven methods. Really in the long run, it's probably better if you 2 go solo, or work together exclusively/closely.
More people = More mess, I guess is/was my final point.
This has been tried SO MANY TIMES. And nearly all; save maybe one or two and one has long died and the other just had people editing whats already there into the 'new' block;, have ended in failure. The styles of the people are to varied. Plus people get bored of waiting for others to have the time, and want to work on it and the project ends up dieing. In that case it is a masive waste of time for those who did make textures that it is just not worth the time and risk to bother with something like this.
There was even a texture challenge based on the idea of a community pack, red VS blue, pick a side and texture for it, first to make a full pack 'won' it never even got a quarter of the way through before waiting on those that 'claimed' tiles got done, or people dropped out.. it never really took off and this was done for FUN.
The whole logic behind a community pack is just flawed from the get so. So many have tried, so many that were very well sorted out.. they have all died.
So yes, you are told the very same thing, as we who have been in this community and have seen such topics and ideals come and fade away that it is not worth it to try.

Thank you both for justifying your two points, that was a whole mess up there. Epic, let's coordinate what textures each of us would do over personal Messaging, and leave this post to be locked and start a WIP one when we've done more work.
Thats the better idea, you two seem to be more intuned and feel alright with each others styles. You can both pick what you feel you'd be good at textureing and go from there.
A rule of thumb with these things: The more people you have the more conflicting styles you get, the more people you have to wait for, and the more likly it is to die. And if people get bored of waiting or chose to drop out, they very well (and have many a times) left and taken their textures with them, no longer giving permission to use them, and that sets the pack back even further. And if you chose to still use them, then that would be theft and the whole project would then be shut down by mods.
Heres some examples: (this was listed in the recent 'community' project topic)
Those are the only ones out of 22 forum search finds(this don't count the ones that don't have the word 'community' in the topic title on a forum search) that have more then 1 page of posts.
So you can see, it has been tried before, some have gotten off the ground, but even the best have faded awayyyyy..

Good luck to the both of you.
