Its MAGIC though, Not technology. Redstone is MAGIC POWDER, The iron gollem is not a robot, Its a living piece of metal animated through MAGIC, Its schizo tech, The most technologically advance item we have is the simplest machine in existence besides a wheel on a stick! And even THAT is powered by magic in some form!
and what is electricity? it is not man made, it is magic. akin to your magic powder redstone. Most technology survives on, or was created with, electricity, ergo, it is a hybrid of magic and man creation, it is how we harness the energy.
A golem, by nature not alive, it is animated in classical context, just as you would mechanically animate a robot, it is not truly alive. This all delves into Artificial Intelligence, which our poor old developers have a hard time orchestrating, so to save anyone further complications, until our modern computer science improves on the minuet scale, I.E. improved AI, we should not pursue this silly argument, alive or not, the game creatures are still predefined, pre-programmed to only accomplish a small list of tasks, in a very specific manner, using sonar like detection to navigate, utilizing very little memory, something that makes a being unique, remembering.
The only way they can get more advanced would be to create a long dead race like the dwemer from skyrim and tie it into strongholds
Do not bring TES lore into this, as you will loose hardcore.
Dwemer are not dead, most of the race disappeared long before the time of written history, only two Dwemer remain on Nirn, or what the average mortal can access, even then, very dangerously.

Villagers need to turn into zombies once killed by a zombie... March 24th 2012
Id like to see more compact redstone types, made with a gold and redstone powder, or another ore.And once you place it on a block, you'll get a crafting tablelike pop-up, where you could place the pieces of it. The downside would be that it power can't go as far through it.

Disappeared and became a giant immortal golem. Yep, I hate people who play Skyrim without caring for lore. This coming from a lore junkie like me.
What is this, magic vs technology thread? Does it matter if iron golem is magical or machinery being that much? Anyways, some things may be added in minecraft that have something 'technological' in it, it doesent need to be modern kind of technology, something like from medieval times would be good. And they should improve uses of redstone (make it possible to put it into wall for example).
It's not a magic vs tech thread, just some stupid people derailed it.
its magicience! The study of combining both science and magic into one powerful system.
Anyways, I think boats needs to be improved with some magicience as well.
For the restone users, they could add some sort of coal powered box that gives redstone an infinite range instead of 15.
Nothing is too advanced for minecraft. I hate people who say that anything is too advanced for minecraft. MC has no set time period. Its obvious we have technical knowledge if we use something so similar to electricity.
Just because you're a person surviving in a wilderness doesn't mean its in the medieval age or stone age. I hate people who underestimate MineCraft like so. You could be stranded from a plane accident or something and have to survive in the wild.
it just makes me mad when people say that MC can't have nice thigs such as technology, just because they think they know everything about a game with barely any limits to how it can be played.

It's not really that similar, because it is infinite, and all, but I get your point.
Minecraft COULD have that sort of technology, but the reason people are arguing is because it is to advanced to be made by one person. It's like a computer. You know what it is, how it works, what it is made of, etc.(If you're a computer techie or tony stark xD) This does not mean you can build it, because it requires further technological aid to make the parts, construct them properly, program it, etc. Planes can be built, but then you need engines, which have vacuum in some places, which would be very difficult to get without others. If THAT problem is solved, I see no reason why we can't have cool machines.
Also, I thought that stuff like sleds actually aren't that bad an idea, and we could have squid-pulled boats as well. Yay for squids!
Off topic: Diggin' the afro, man. should've put sideburns, though. xD

Pistons seem pretty air-tight, I'm pretty sure Steve could make nearly anything.
Have squid pulled boats? That would be kind of slow.
But sled dogs??
Using dogs for speedy transport? I never even considered that.
It saddens me that most people talking about the golem being magic and not a robot don't even know what a robot is. The words literal meaning is closer to mindless slave than machine, and whether the golem is magic or not it's still a robot ( and so is a snow golem). Besides, whether or not it's magic, it's still advanced because for it to be able to move it would have to have hinges and joints.
I really don't understand why people think technology and magic cancel each other out. Enchantment tables, brewing stands, redstone, golems and portals are all technology, they're just powered by magic. Technology doesn't mean machinery, it's anything made by humans (or other sentient creature) to make life easier (a wood sword is technological), magic is usually considered a natural (or even divine) force of the universe, which can often be used to fuel technology.
I agree with the OP, some more advanced stuff would be cool.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
Huh, no story? Wouldn't the game's end credits serve as lore? It does essentially illuminate upon the reason for the player's existence in the Minecraft world. I believe that was one of the major, albeit trivial, complaints that people voiced their concerns about when it was first introduced.
In any case, on topic: I believe that advancement in Minecraft's technologies does seem a bit overdue; I'd love to see new devices to make construction of various machines and gadgetry easier, such as the new Redstone Lamps from 12w08a. Elaboration on minecart/boat tech is something I certainly hope for and anticipate, though I don't wish to see things like internal combustion engines or devices any more advanced than the current redstone components.
This may seem a bit unjustified, but like many others, I don't feel such contraptions would fit the "fantasy" theme of Minecraft with its whimsical and quaint notions. A more rational argument would be that Steve would lack the knowledge and the tools to create complex constructs. If technological advancement were to occur in Minecraft, I'd feel it would best start with toolmaking, as a pick and a crafting bench would hardly be useful in making anything beyond a minecart. Minecraft is a game that is obviously unrestricted by the confines of reality, but development along this path would mirror the actual growth of human civilization in ancient history.
Living villager with an armour or just a robot, you cant make anything alive or even mechanical with only iron, iron golems are not powered by redstone or anything else, it's obviously magic.
Why do you even care? there's a green exploding four-legged demon near your house, and iron golems cant do anything about it!
I don't know about you guys, but I think the Allocator should be added into vanilla. It would open up a whole world of possibilties for Minecraft, for survival, creative, and adventure maps.
Not only that, but I also think it is suitably Minecraft themed, fitting in right next to pistons and dispensers in tech level.
It would be awesome.
I've thought for the longest time that it'd be cool if you could make a 4x4 crafting table and a furnace where you can put two things in at once (to be cooked together). Both of these would require obsidian, diamond, endstone and netherbrick. Y'know, proof that you've been around.
On the 4x4 crafting table, you'd begin making things like cannons, wagons, bigger boats and generally larger and more useful structures. Perhaps more tools too. Spears, for longer melee range. Javelins. Maybe even a musket (but it'd have to be clunky, requiring you to "craft" the musket and the bullet together to load it -- to justify using other weapons). Basically, you'd move up a small stage towards better things. The larger furnace would probably be for more sturdy materials. Steel alloys of various types come to mind. And of course, Notch/Jeb/Jon could always make up some.
I think it'd be great if Minecraft developed this super-deep system where you slowly advance through tech levels. Similarly, if it also allowed you to advance deeper into use of magic. Why can't we have both? Doesn't seem wrong to me to use both.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.

For one, we already have cannons. The cannons we have are also far more balanced than a crafted one and they also let the player use their creativity.
Two, I do like that idea for a firearm. A single-shot, long reload, high damage, long range weapon.
Three, 4x4 crafting table is not needed. Just use a new kind of crafting recipe.
Nothing in the game seems like magic to me. Potions are alchemy fueled by a super-heated conductor, and enchantments utilize tissue orbs that ooze out of all lifeforms on the planet (did you notice that the only things orbs DON'T ooze out of, are golems, which are technically not alive?). So enchantments are more like blood magic. Redstone is clearly the analogue of electricity in the Minecraft world (which is somewhat redundant, as electricity already exists in the form of lightning), so it's more technology than magic. Portals are rifts in the space-time continuum, zombies and skeletons are humans who have been horribly mutated by the radioactive fallout from the "cumulus mushroom", and so on. Nothing in the game is magic. NOTHING.
How does that make sense? We can already craft advaced stuff. Plus a story will never be added to Minecraft.
(unrelated: I facepalmed at "dwemer from skyrim". It's so sad that people don't know it's part of a series)
I wonder why so many people bought it, if they were unaware of Oblivion and previous games.
Good marketing on Bethesda's part? Internet hype?

I mean, if they cared to know, they would see the Lore makes more than half the game!

Actually yes,
my "childhood" was defined by Law & Order marathons, anatomy textbooks and obsessive compulsive disorder.
