Im actually interested to see the votes because up until now I thought everyone was against giant oceans in minecraft. I know I certainly dont like giant oceans in minecraft, but thats me.
I think the oceans are fine, even the huge ones.. I think what needs to change is for other biomes to be larger. Much larger.
The game is capable of creating such vast worlds.. I don't see why biomes can't be huge. And more logically placed.. like having an equator of sorts to a world, and having to travel far north or south to find snow biomes. More desert near the equator..
I love the idea of worlds where you have to travel vast distances to find a bit of everything. Incorporating nether fast travel and so forth..
The way it is, you often get ridiculous things like a small desert bordered by snow and jungle and plains. These tiny little microcosms of the entire world, in a 2000x2000 square blocks. Of a world that can potentially be larger than the surface area of the earth.
I like the idea of having to travel across a vast ocean to find a desert or jungle, for example.
If jeb adds a LOT of underwater mobs, fish, ores, underwater cave systems, coral reefs, sponges, more islands and BIG pirate ships, then it will be cool to have these huge oceans.
I just want to say I don't mean necessarily scaling things up to full earth scale, and endless wandering to find certain biomes.
I've seen some pretty good sized biomes.. But also some very small ones. I would be happy enough to see the current minimum size of a biome doubled, and some more sense of order to their placement.
I think they are just right...it gives boats a usefull use... If the oceans are smaller, we can just swim, but with large oceans, by using boats, traveling is much safer and faster.
I like the current ocean size, it adds a proper sense of scale to the game and can lead to epic continental colonization quests. As others have mentioned I also think that the current biome sizes are way to small. As of 1.1 and 1.2betas I can literally see 2-3 different biomes from one spot! The 1.0 size was much better, but still slightly too small for my tastes. When the size of your planned building is bigger than the average biome size... bad things happen. Perhaps a biome size selector could be added when creating a new world? small, medium, large, and FRICKIN HUGE!!!
You normally spawn in the middle of a huge continent, the chances of spawning in an island are very low, but not 0%.
If you spawned in a continent then you have enough resources to survive for years... why would you need to touch an ocean?
If you spawned in an island ( which is NOT common at all ) just delete the world and try another seed.
Also, if for some reason you would need to leave the continent you are in now, the adventure of having to travel days makes me feel like im in a great quest looking for treasure, 3+ days in the sea, food is slowly fading a way, i need a way to survive, THIS IS AN ADVENTURE !
They are just right for me...
The only thing i would like is if they added more content, like sunken ships... fish, etc.

Meh, I wouldn't want the biomes larger, that would make "crossroads" more rare. I love it when many biomes clash in one area, but not too bad like in the old gens. I think it's fine.
They should get rid of or overhaul mushroom biomes because they made large oceans simply to hide them. Imagine if they hid a desert pyramid type thing with ultra huge deserts..
They seem to be massive compared to all other biomes. Most biomes go for about what, 200-300 blocks? Oceans go for tens of KILOMETERS.
They should replace oceans with lakes, here is the biome size comparison(large regular biome vs. small ocean):
14,000 / 300 = ~47
Oceans are 47x larger then any other biome. Anyone find this stupid?

i guess they COULD be a little smaller, but they are called an ocean, so it has to be large. the probability of islands should be a little higher, but everything else is good.

I'm allergic to creepers, I'm obsessed with iron, and I love fish
For me what make the large oceans such a bad feature is the awful boat mechanics. An update to boats would make he oceans better. Maybe have some seagulls flying around.
Imagine if ocean sailing was like in Zelda: Wind Waker
I rather like large oceans, however, they can be a problem. They create resources that are far more difficult to get otherwise, clay for instance. but i think we need more water based content, and we need a redesign of how water works in general.
I'd love to see water work more like the finite liquids mod. And from there add in some more awesome content like scooba equipment, maybe the recent change to the way the world will work will prompt modders to give us our ocean content.
Personally it would be nice for large bodies of water to have waves, even huge storms. Better boats, etc etc just a thought though.

Agreed, the other biomes clearly need to be made larger by a factor of at least 10 :tongue.gif:
Please don't replace oceans with lakes, I remember the alpha and beta days when it was only lakes and it was frustrating as hell! The oceans allow for fast coastal travel via boats, a real asset that disconnected lakes don't allow.

Well, whenever I'm looking for a biome I want, I tend to run into an ocean everywhere I go. Like I said earlier, imagine if we had huge deserts..
Hmm, I would like to go to a swamp biome to get some lillypads!
Ok, there's a taiga here..
There's a plain here..
Ok, I ran into a desert, I mine as well treck it because it takes up 2/3 of my screen, if I go any other way I might run into an 'arm' of it.
Ok, I've been going for a km and it is still desert...
OK, wtf, It's been 4km and still desert..
Mmm, 10km, what happened to everything else in the game? Is this the Twighlight Zone?
See where I'm going with this? If you travel a lot, it tends to eclipse the rest of the game.
Large oceans are wonderful. Here is a screenshot of our DynMap (Google Maps for Minecraft) on our server. I circles the spawn point in red. The mushroom island at the bottom right is over 4000 block away from spawn to give you a sense of scale.
The ones that seem to go on FOREVER with no content and low chance of mush biome are useless, maybe 2000 blocks or so?
Too big with no content.
Yes! I've always wanted 2km oceans, it's about the perfect size. I remember when they were first introduced, I happened to run into one that was about that size. It still felt like an ocean but there was still land if I traveled a little bit.
To me it has nothing to do with the lack of content of oceans right now, just the fact that they feel like their own planets. You travel a couple of kilometers and you are playing Neptunecraft.
Oceans are fine. For every world where I start in the middle of a gigantic lake with no land in sight, I get ten where i start in the middle of a massive continent with absolutely no water for ten thousand blocks. In 99% of seeds, the proportion of land to water is fine. Really the problem is that land biomes themselves are too small.
Either way, if you don't like your start, just remake the map. It is very easy.
I don't think it adds anything to the game to need to travel for 30 minutes or even 2 hours just to find more playspace.
And don't say "zomg realism, oceans are supposed to be big", because if realism detracts from the fun, it's better unrealistic.
Realism doesnt detracts from the fun, if the realistic elements are added correctly they can bring a lot of fun to gameplay, Ex : Hunger. ( take this just as my opinion )
Anyways... realistic or unrealistic oceans are not bad... however i would like more content ( fish, uw dungeons ), and probably a land detector.
The reason of why people think oceans are so big is because when they explore they probably go on a direction where there is more ocean, but there cant be ocean everywhere, if we only had a " Land detector " that would tell us were the nearest beach is, oceans would be easier to explore.
I think they are just right. I like the endless ocean seeds, although they could use a bit more content.
A lot of people would appreciate oceans if there was more reasons to explore them. I would love large boats, underwater treasure, treasure maps, wrecked ships, and more underwater life. I want an explicit reason to want to live there such as tropical plants, trees, atmosphere. Murky oceans don't provide much.
