Welcome.
This guide is intended to discuss surviving and thriving in a dirt filled Superflat world.
By the end of this guide you will know everything you need to know to have a working food farm, nicely colored and decorated house and ranged weaponry. But most importantly you will learn how to live like a boss in the most inhospitable environment in minecraft. Surviving is not enough. The purpose of this guide is to live, thrive and build.... And you thought becoming self sufficient in the Nether or the End was hard!
The intention of this guide is to discuss and develop survival skills, and show off how pimp a world you can make. This challenge is intended to be played hack free, which means no water, trees or lava. But using editors to obtain those items can be fun also, and makes for interesting lets plays.
Altho I intend this guide for a single life that does not necessarily mean you need to use the hardcore option. I personally have been playing on normal difficulty but starting over if I die. The main reason for this is that you will probably end up doing a LOT of traveling in a single direction in a straight line in order to find newly spawned animals. So if you die you will probably never get back to where you came from. You will probably also create your house close to a location where you found a large spawn of chickens to start your farm, and that could be in the middle of nowhere.
World of Famine
The hardest part of Superflat is the constant starvation. Because of this you must do everything you can not to waste your energy (hunger).
- Try not to jump if you don't need too. And build flat to avoid needing to jump.
- Never sprint if you can avoid it (Ender pearls are a better quick escape).
- Try not to miss when attacking an enemy. It still fatigues you.
- Use the right food at the right time to help conserve it.
- Try not to get hit, taking damage lowers exhaustion.
- Don't get into unnecessarily fights. Avoid slimes when you can.
- Crits are more (hunger) cost efficient than hits (As long as you dont miss). So use them when you can pull it off
- If you only land a hit 50% of the time when trying to crit you are only 10% behind on your hunger efficiency over standard punches. So even with bad aim it may still be worth trying.
- You can crit multiple mobs in a single jump. Critting 2 zombies per jump is the most efficient damage you can safely do with your fists.
Available Foods
The following is a list of all foods obtainable by the player. Meat (Raw Beef / Raw Porkchop)
Hunger: 1.5
Saturation: 1.8
Best used: When needed only. Horde it for emergencies because it is so powerful.
Meat is the best food in Superflat, however it is very hard to obtain, as cows/pigs only spawn during chunk generation. The only sure way to have a continual supply available is to travel in a single direction so that you are constantly entering newly generated chunks. With the apparent low spawnrate of animals on new chunks it is possible to die of starvation before encountering your next supply of pigs/cows. Because of this meat is considered tasty and desirable but not feasible as a stable diet. Use it to help keep yourself alive long enough to obtain a more stable food income and find a place to settle.
Raw Chicken
Hunger: 1
Saturation: 1.2
Notes: 30% Chance of food poisoning
Best Used: Out of combat, with 1/2 a bar of hunger remaining. Eat till full. As main dietary intake.
Raw chicken is possibly the best source of food available within the Superflat. This is because it is the only automated farmable meat within Superflat and takes very little hunger to obtain.
Raw chicken has a 1/3 chance of food poisoning. However, food poisoning does not stack and is simply refreshed each time you are infected. Because of this waiting till you have 1/2 a bar of hunger remaining and then eating a full 10 pieces of Raw Chicken will not only leave you with a full hungerbar when the food poisoning wears off, but will also still provide a little bit of sustenance to the hidden saturation bar.
Rotten Flesh
Hunger: 2
Saturation: 0.8
Notes: 80% chance of food poisoning
Best Used: In combat, just to top back up into regeneration.
Rotten Flesh is a lesser alternative to Raw chicken. Obtaining it can be costly, as you expend a lot of hunger killing zombies due to their armor. Compared to Raw chicken, waiting till you have only 1/2 a food bar left then eating as much as you can (5 pieces) fills your hunger bar but only provides 4 sustenence (Compared to the 12 which Raw chicken provides), most of which is lost by the time the poisoning wears off. Because of this the best use of Rotten flesh is to keep you regenerating health during battle, and not as a general meal break.
Spider Eye
Hunger: 1
Saturation: 0.8
Notes: 100% chance of being poisoned (NOT food poisoning)
Best Used: Out of combat when hurt, just to top back up into regeneration
Spiders Eye causes physical damage for 4 seconds when consumed, and provides a decent amount of saturation. It is best used when you have between 9 or less hunger bars remaining and are not in combat, and when the amount you need to eat to begin regenerating wont kill you from the poison damage. Also note that the poison effect is refreshed with each consumtion, so even tho you loose 2 hearts over the 4 seconds when you eat a single piece, quickly eating 4 pieces will do much less than 8 damage total.
Weapons Egg; Chickens are the only farmable animal in Superflat, as you do not require wheat for breeding. Although eggs do no damage, they are the only ranged weapon available to the player and cause knockback when striking enemies. This can make eggs very useful. However, eggs are also used to farm Raw Chicken so using eggs as a weapon may not be safe until your chicken farm is producing a lot of chickens.
Transportation Ender Pearl; Ender Pearls are the best form of transportation in Superflat. A single throw can teleport you up to 50 blocks in a flat environment or a lot further if thrown from the top of a pillar. They can also be used to escape dangerous situations or to buy you time to regenerate back to full health. (Note: You can walk 1200 blocks using the same amount of energy it takes to punch one enderman to death)
Obtainable Blocks
As we all know, mere survival is not enough! Once you have yourself established its time to get creative. In Superflat it is possible to obtain 9 different colored wools, and flowers and tall grass for decoration.
Grass; Technically not obtainable but it can be grown to any location you choose. Dirt; You can make sure it stays as dirt by preventing grass from spreading onto it by leaving 2 tall gaps or by placing other surrounding the dirt with other blocks. Wool
Wool (crafting string)
Obtainable from Sheep: White / Light Grey / Grey / Black / Brown / Pink
Obtainable via dyes: White, Yellow, Red, Orange, Pink (Dying sheep and crafting have equal droprate) Tall Grass Rose and Yellow Flowers
Obtainable, Useless Items
For completion I decided to also list all obtainable items which are useless as well.
This is where challenges come into the game. I have already seen a post about the slimeball challenge, which is to play on hardcore and see how many slimes you can collect before you die. Music disks would also make a good choice for this type of challenge.
-Feather
-Gunpowder
-Leather
-Slimeball
-Wheat Seeds
-Arrows
-Music Disks (From skeleton killing creeper)
-Gold Nugget (From Zombie Pigmen hit by lightning, thanx FlaminBurrito2)
Enemies to Fight
The following mobs have useful drops Spiders (For string/spider eyes) Zombies (For Rotten Flesh) Skeletons (For bonemeal) Enderman (For ender eyes (Once you are established))
Enemies to Avoid
The following mobs have no useful items Slimes
Creepers
Other useful tips / Info
- If you want to build a house using different colored dyes like the one in my screenshot, remember you can always place each block as white wool and go back and dye them later.
- Rather than trying to fight mobs at night it may be best to wait till daytime and collect the dropped items from Zombies and skeletons, make creepers fall into pits so they are not a danger, then take on the spiders one at a time. This is a very low risk method of obtaining most items you will need.
- With that many colored dyes you could make some awesome pixel art :biggrin.gif:
- As far as I can tell wolfs can not spawn in Superflat. Worth mentioning. If anyone proves this wrong let me know.
- Fall damaged based mob traps are possible in the super flat. When designing them be sure to remember that mobs more than 50 blocks away will not move, so their size is limited somewhat by the lack of water. Here's a proof of concept from cam94509.
- Dirt blocks are the only solid blocks obtainable in the Superflat which an Enderman can move. Building structures out of wool will prevent griefing.
Good guide! You know, it would be easy to make an adventure map by putting a sapling, 2 buckets of water, a bucket of lava, a reed, brown and red mushroom, and seeds in a chest.
This is a very nice guide indeed. Great job! :smile.gif:
Though I am afraid you are missing something I believe. Zombie Pigmen can spawn on the overworld when lightning hits a pig, right? That means in the rare event that occurs, you have extremely rare access to gold nuggets (collect enough and you can make gold ingots). Though they have no use, I just figured I would add that in.
This is indeed interesting, although I'm fairly sure the idea of a superflat world is for Creative more than Survival. I hope that it gets changed so the surface is something more like 32 blocks above Bedrock, so you still have a lot of space to build up but can still go down.

Yes, but you have to admit -- this flat world gives us a really great platform to build a survival challenge map on.
You don't have to worry about players just walking until the regular terrain starts generating again. They will really be stuck with the structures and non-native materials you give them initially (if any).

Yeah, and I find it interesting how this open field of space is as much of a prison as a bunch of small rooms and corridors.
You forgot about Gold nuggets. If you can get enough pigs to be hit by lightning, you will get a lot of gold nuggets. Can't think of any other use though...

No workbench, no ingot. Even with a workbench, no wood, gold useless.
I never thought slimes could be so horrific until I tried trapping animals or doing other stationary things. I kill some slimes but then a couple big ones become a horde of tiny ones. I actually died the first night because I couldn't make a base big enough to protect me from skellies. I'll never look at slimes the same way again! :huh.gif:

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Yeah. It would be great if there was a 1/100 chance to spawn a sapling with the bonemeal on the grass XD
Where are you going to get the workbench from? o.o
generation. Social experiment.
Question: What's the point of generate structures: ON? xD
Nothing.
