Animal breeding is fine. Pigs give you meat, cows give you meat, leather and milk, chickens give you meat and eggs and sheep give you... well, not a damn thing unless you kill them.
I'm fine with animal breeding.
It gives you other things to do in minecraft survival and other buildings to build. (aka farms, barns pastures etc.)
I think the mechanics of 'animal husbandry' could use a bit of improvement however.
1) Maybe specific foods could be held for specific animals, rather than all wheat. This way you could choose a specific animal to lure into a pen.
(e.g. cows get wheat, chickens get seeds, pigs get mushrooms, sheep get tallgrass, etc.)
2) Wolves should be breedable as they are the rarest of all animals and have suicidal tendencies when following you more often then not.
3) I was playing SMP with one other person recently. When corralled into a small room animals have a tendency to glitch their way out of the roof when jumping on SMP, this is the most annoying thing I've ever encountered. I had to double line the ceiling to prevent them from escaping and even then I could see them glitching through the walls and ceiling occasionally.

When no one was looking, the Endermen took forty blocks.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.
I like the ability to breed, since you can set up house anywhere (even in an ocean or desert biome where animals don't spawn or underground) , bring a pair from somewhere and breed them so that you can have them. Will be quite nice once sheep start regrowing wool, since it will make sense to build up a big flock, with a few of each color.
Coupled with hunger it creates a whole bunch of pointless and boring chores: Grow wheat, feed the animals, kill animals. Rinse and repeat... bleagh! It would only be pleasant if there was a way to build automation to perform those chores.
In servers... it is a nightmare. There are always enough idiots that go out and kill everything in sight, depopulating the world. Unless you got your animals when the server was first setup you can walk for days before you can find certain animals to capture and breed.
Putting it all together and looking at how things stand now, I much preferred the "no hunger, no breeding" that what we had in 1.7. Things might change over time and get better again. but in the meantime it sucks and we just put up with it.
Animal breeding is optional. Don't do it if you don't like it. Play creative if you don't like Survival.
It's not really optional when you're forced to use it when all of your animals die. Ehsh, why does everyone think they can get away with that argument? It doesn't even work 90% of the time.
I don't agree that passive mob spawning is not flawed, In fact I believe the entire game development community is trying to shed this outdated form of spawning and have all relied on spawning methods that more closely resemble the real world in mannerisms.
How is the real world necessary better? Was this game meant to be realistic? Should it be made more realistic? Minecraft is not a realistic game and it isn't meant to be one. People play video games like this one in order to briefly escape reality.
In that case, why haven't the same breeding principles been applied to hostile mobs? Is it not the realistic thing to do for a realistic set of creatures? I like the points you present, but I cringe whenever I see the "realism" argument being brought up.
In any case, current animal breeding is flawed in that animals do not breed without intervention, conveniently opening the possibility of mass extinction of various farm animal species in a given set of chunks.
Personally I really like the idea of animal breeding but I think it needs to be refined much more. Random breeding would be really nice and so would automation for the system. Random breeding I am pretty sure we all remember Notch's swarm of sheep on the front page but if the chances were reduced to being successful in 1 out of 1000 random times, random breeding would allow the landscape to be repopulated and would allow me to not have to tend my pig farm as much. Right now, If I want to go adventuring into a cave, I have to either expand my pasture by a massive amount to allow for more pigs, or slaughter 2/3rds of my population. I may be lazy but I think in game dynamics such as random breeding, possibly growing and receding forests, and maybe the ability to simply drop wheat (or other species specific items, I like that idea) into the pasture and have the pigs go nuts would greatly improve the game. The current system isn't broken and there are more important bugs to get to but a little attention to making the world "come alive" without player intervention would be very nice and greatly appreciated.
yea i really dont like it . i can hardly find animals on my world... they should spawn more often i loved how it was before the spawn change. animal breeding is a fun thing though :smile.gif:
Breeding is fine to me, i am actually thankful that they implemented this into the game.
1.5: Hardly any mobs i can see, :sad.gif:
1.7.3: Better, but i still cannot see a mob without walking 500 miles
1.8.1: WHERE ARE THE SHEEP???!!!
1.0.0: Yay, i can now see a cow without trying to swim biomes!
1.0.1: Its starting to get crowded, but thats fine, im happy to kill a few million. :biggrin.gif:
Basically, if you dont like mobs, just go to the configs and change it, or even mod it, i dont care.
There are no 1.0.1 , yet
OP, Animal Breeding is fine, what's wrong with it? it just adds that 'Farmville-ish' feeling to MineCraft, for those animal-loving ones.

Overall,I think it adds to the farming experience alot more than before. I don't generally enjoyfarming but since the latest updates added a hunger feature I started to farm things alot more. Animal breeding is a good addition to it and doesn't just limit a player to farming Cactus,Wheat,Sugar Cane & Mushroom. Now you can farm weapon materials like Feathers and armour material such as Leather, and of course... Pork
It does add something more to spawning. And it is fun, but the fact that I don't like is how no animals respawn.
If you ask me the OP is just another those "I dont like something in the game, and in stead to learn how to addapt to that and try to like it I try to adapt it to my likeings by bitchin at the forums hoping mojang will change it to my likeing" threads..
I have noticed how annoying and pointless animal breeding is. I liked it better when animals spawned and you didn't have to worry about killing animals. I liked in beta where you could just walk around and not worry about animals not respawning. It takes a big aspect out of the game. In my opinion, this needs to be fixed before biomes. It is annoying and it takes a big thing out of the game. I think we can all agree with this. I like a lot of things they added in 1.0 just not the animal breeding.
I'm sorry, but I have to respectively disagree. Breeding adds an edge of urgency to the game. That way, you actually have to be a husbandman, and explorer, and farmer, and miner, and architect; not just a player that looks outside and eats all food it wants (I suppose it adds the necessity of having to ration your meals). I understand your complaints, but I think breeding should stay.
But now it is really boring.. I got many animals in my farms, but my ladscapes are soo empty.. There is no life in there.. I miss the times, where animals spawned everywhere again and again.
Now I have to let my animals free, that my landscapes are a bit more lifefull.
You just know they're all going to wander into an ocean or get stuck somewhere.
We need animals to despawn and respawn unless tamed. It keeps the animal populations in the right places.

There is, it's a server only update.

LOL, sorry, no
Your own poll says otherwise.
