Oceans are far too frequent and in serious need of content if they are to be liked for being so common and huge.
Once again I agree that frequency is the main problem here. It is cool to be walking west and you hit a huge ocean to sail across. It is annoying however to then go North, East and South to find the same thing. They need to make sure your not trapped on islands as often.
somesort of waves or currents would be interesting, but with minecrafts water physics i think thats probably near impossible to pull off with any real success.
I might be able to see currents being made through animations. The water texture would be changed to have a clear flow, and the user would be pushed in that direction. This could also open up an avenue for different kinds of boats. One that is slow but can resist currents, fast but can be thrown off track easy, ect.

I hear everyone complaining but the size of their oceans are meagre at best, my SMP server's world has an ocean some people spent 2+ hours trying to cross, they found a few tiny (I mean like 8x8) Islands along the way, but in the end I had to teleport them back.

Am I the only one who has noticed that the new oceans that generate seem to be obscenely large? I remember back when the world was mostly land, and if you came across a large body of water it was the coolest thing. Now I find the opposite to be true, and aside from where you spawn, the world seems to be mostly ocean. What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I'm not a fan.
Sample image from my server and this isn't even as bad as some that I've seen.
oceans are big in real life too and make up most of the surface of the earth

This isn't real life though. Why do we have to sacrifice so much land for bodies of huge, contentless bodies of water in a game where green monsters try to blow you up, zombies and animated skeletons exist, and spiders are the size of a man?
Oceans are great for PvP servers, just go from spawn, gather wood, food, and saplings from the mainland. and then make your home under the ocean, cover up your entrance with a natural block. NO ONE WILL FIND YOU. :tongue.gif:
I really wish people would shut the **** up about realism. Since when was doing a whole lot of nothing at sea fun? Especially when running out of resources and get stuck on crappy islands with little to no materials. Hey, if we want to add more realism let's throw in scurvy so that way you will die faster in the ocean because realism is fun right?
On the bright side, at least they're no longer glitched to the point where it's nothing but ocean.
And quite honestly. I think it *should* be an option you can choose from, [Oceans] : Small, normal, huge, humongous, impossible to find land. Under game options when making a new world.
I think you just fixed the problem. Modders, get on it!
I like it. I like being able to cross a vast ocean in search of new land instead of the mediocre large lakes that were there originally in pre-1.8. If you don't like them, don't go to them. There are 3 other compass directions. Something for everyone.
I do think they should add 1.7.3 biomes to the world options, though.
I love the giant oceans. It's fun "sailing to new worlds". It also actually gives a reason to actually use boats. Before, most bodies of water I could just build a bridge over and didn't feel the need to craft a boat, and then find a way to dock it without losing it or smashing it for sticks and a couple blocks (why do we get sticks from a boat anyways).
Although, some of the oceans I've seen from people's videos are a little too big. So a little bit of a limit would be nice, but not absolutely necessary :wink.gif:
To everyone saying "OCEANS ARE BIG n00bs", can't you spare 2 seconds to think of an argument? Please.
Big oceans don't add anything to gameplay. They don't make the game more fun or interesting. I'm fine with oceans, but they sould have 1/5 of their current size.

How many items are blocks in real life? How many physics float above the ground?, how many tons of dirt can you carry around on you?
That's what I thought, Minecraft is a game. The main objective of a game is to have fun, not to be realistic.
Too big? Oceans are OCEANS

Realism?

So we should make diamonds the weakest now? Because diamonds being hard is very realistic.
