** Jeb is now releasing Weekly Minecraft Snapshots "Weekly Builds" as Prereleases! He will release at least one per week even if unstable.
* You can just ignore these if you wish, they will not be pushed through the official launcher. That way your mods will not break unless you decide to test or experiment with these Development builds.
These "snapshots" will be named 11w47 ( year and week) + a, b, c etc (in case more than one is released in a week), in one word such as "11w47a".
Jeb says that you will still be able to play on a 1.0.0 Server while using the Pre-releases.
+ Jeb has not provided any details about the changes in this snapshot other than to say not much had changed. Though a little earlier he said he had fixed the Double-Door issue. So that might or might not be in the snapshot.
Per [ Twitter Source ] -- The below is NOT a Snapshot Pre-release, this was actually released before the above snapshot and is Official on the Minecraft.net site.
The 1.0.1 Server version is now available at the Minecraft.net download section. At least the .jar version is, the .exe version has not been updated yet.
This fixes the Login key problem and a null pointer exception. A Client update is not needed for this, you can use Client 1.0.0 to access this new Server version.
----------------------------------------------------
* I originally posted all of this over 4 hours ago in the MCP thread when this was all first announced by Jeb, then decided that it should be here too for the people who don't follow MCP.
----------------------------------------------------
[EDIT] Also; Jeb says that he will continue Developing Minecraft Full-Time but notch will be working on other things [ Source ]
++ Jeb says that future versions of Minecraft will now be backwards compatible regarding Terrain Generation even when the generator is updated.
Meaning that if playing a 1.0.0 map in a later version of the game that has a new biome, that it will instead keep generating the old 1.0.0 terrain on that old map instead of the new terrain.
Have you been living underneath a rock, or am I sadly confused?

Apparently, I'VE been living under a rock, because this is news to me. It's good to know that development won't slow down, even after the game has been released and Notch has left the team. I knew Jeb could pull it off.
Come to think of it, I feel like Jeb made this game what it is. He is the one who hyped it up with his countless tweets and leaks, which makes me feel like he did most of the development. I could be wrong and Notch could be doing just as much as Jeb, but I think Jeb practically made this game.

LOLOLOLOLOL Notch made the entire game up until some time in Alpha when he started Mojang then hired Jeb to help out. So no Jeb did not practically make this game. ALTHOUGH, I do feel that Notch hasn't done much lately and Jeb has been working hard on MC.
This is the most retarted thing ever. The release was supposed to mark a stable version that all the servers and players and mods are on the same page with. Now with this ****, its going to be like the prereleases again, with uncertainty across all modders and players about what version to be on. Thanks for being an idiot, jeb.
Pre releases after release?
Why dont they just do a proper update when they fix bugs instead of this.
It's like when valve made announcements that there was gonna be an announcement on l4d2.
How is that anything like Valve announcing L4D2? You could compare that too Mojang announcing Minecraft 2.
They are doing this the same way that many companies hav, like Blizzard for example. They have public testing servers when they need to test content. Players make the choice if they'd rather keep playing the released version or go test the next version. It's a great way to do it when you don't have any internal testers besides the developers themselves.

I know Notch made the game. I'm saying I feel like Jeb did most of the work as it got into its more recent stages when most of the newer features were added. Jeb pretty much made the game as we know it today (i.e. the countless new features he worked on from 1.8 until release)
Higher level thinking fail?

There is always a stable version. The existence of development builds doesn't change that one bit.
There is always a stable version. The existence of development builds doesn't change that one bit.
I think you're missing my point. People will always got to these, "development builds" or "Prereleases" for new content. This happened with the prereleases and it will happen again now. Several servers I go on completely died because everyone switched to the prereleases. And because of this, mods did and will have to constantly adjust for the current development build, or prerelease to stay up with the demands of the huge amount of people flocking to them. Its not about the existence of the stable version at all, its the fact that there wont be a singular version that everyone stays on, and this will be a pain in the ass for server owners and mod developers.
I think we shouldn't even call them pre-releases, as that isn't what they really are. They do not carry a traditional version number, and unlike 1.8pre and 1.9 pre, they aren't being built up to any sort of release. I'm calling them weekly builds. Much like how I call the latest Firefox versions "Nightly builds." Because that's what they are.
I suggest we all call them Weekly Builds from now on, because that's what they are.
I wrote up something that hopefully makes the version numbering more clear for the "two channel" development.
------ X Updates ------
New content, fixes, etc. Released after considerable amounts of testing. A "Finished" patch.
As long as Minecraft is in development, these will always be released.
------ Y Updates ------
Bug fixes updates. Usually to fix big, missed bugs in the X update.
This kind of update is the one they want to avoid, as it means the previous "stable" build had a significant bug to warrant the update.
----- _ZZ Updates -----
These updates are rare "silent" updates, usually released quickly after another update to fix a serious bug.
These updates will most likely be completely avoided in the Full Version development cycle.
Minecraft AAwBBc The Development Channel
------ AAwBB Weekly Build ------ AA=Year - BB=Week
Cutting edge builds that are released solely for testing purposes.
These will always have the newest content available, and they may not be stable.
These will always be released as long as Minecraft is in development.
------ C Sub-Weekly Build ------
A second weekly update, only released if necessary.
(For example, game crashing bugs that prevent people from testing the weekly build, etc)
Also, unrelated: People need to stop being critical of the Weekly builds. The weekly builds are designed so Jens can get the most out of testing, not so everyone can jump and get the newest features as fast as possible. "Public Development Builds" are an excellent trend in small development, Bugs are found and fixed quicker, making for an overall better game.
If you don't like them, then don't download them. They are optional for a reason.
There is no reason to complain about Mods not being supported for weekly builds, and it's unreasonable to demand that Mojang hinder progress on Minecraft just so mod users can have their cake and eat it too.
If you want mods, stay on the Stable cycle.
If you want to test new features. choose the Development cycle.
If you want both: too bad.
