In version 1.9 PR4, creepers are clearly much more deadly. Larger damage radius and much higher lethality. I find if very difficult to build up the first few days without getting killed by a creeper.
Once I have bows, things a much more easy.
Trouble is, every hardcore game I have played has ended in a creeper death blossom, before I have been able to mate my first two chickens... before I have arrows.
So, what is the best way to kill a creeper in 1.9PR4 without a bow?
Here are some options. Please tell me what you think.
1) Walk up in friendship and offer your hand in peace. Hey, the creeper will be dead! :wink.gif:
2) Sword -- Hit it with a sword and run away as quickly as possible. If lucky, survive, and repeat.
3) Sword -- Hit it a lot as fast as you can. Anyone had any luck with this?
4) Lead creeper into a watering hole, then tap it and back off.
5) Cactus trap -- build a trap where flowing water pushes said creeper into cactus.
6) Knock it off a cliff. I like this one, except they don't follow orders very well... "HEY, you creeper, stand right there." :wink.gif:
I personally have one for number 8, when you find a creeper make sure you can fight it on a semi-flat land, then you have to get it's attention and basically follow this pattern
1.Hit with Sword (stone sword works the same as iron sword because I don't use critical hits on creepers)
2.Go backwards quickly
3.Go fowards (kind of like a saw pattern)
4.Repeat
Creepers take four hits to kill by stone or iron sword by the way.

That used to work for me in prior versions... but in 1.9, it has been failing miserably. I hit them with a sword and as I am backing off, they blow up. Recently, in PR4, I cannot seem to get out of their blast radius. They seem to be able to do 5 hearts of damage at about 10 blocks.
OTOH, I tried just hitting it a lot twice now. Both times, the creeper blew up in my face. I will try it again, since others are having success.
A: The "Edit Post" button. Use it. That way you don't triple post to respond to posts that were already there.
B: Do you really have this much trouble with Creepers? Skeletons are far more annoying, but equally non-threatening imo.

Knockback seems to have been nerfed; I know for a FACT that I am not knocking the Creepers back nearly as far as I used to in 1.8.1. Many times they barely go back 1 square and that results in large explosions since I'm still in the death radius.
I know WHY it's been nerfed; because of the enchantment, but I don't like it. I'm tryings to save up my points so I can get more diamond from the vein I have below my base, but they keep killing me!

We dig dig dig dig dig dig dig in our mine the whole day through!
To dig dig dig dig dig dig dig is what we like to do!
I use the "run backwards" tactic, but minus the "go forward again" bit. Hit, dodge back until they start to chase you again, repeat. If they aren't chasing you again you should still be running backwards until they are. Do not block unless you're absolutely certain they're gonna blow, as the speed reduction will make sure they do.
Actually, if you've got full health, odds are you could just stand there blocking and let them do their worst. You'll be in trouble if they've got any buddies nearby though.
A height advantage is a definite bonus if you can get it. If you're two blocks above them, it's pretty easy to kill them without setting them off.

Just take a step back after the first hit... they will stop hissing... then go in and hit them twice, fast... finish them off. Easy.

Doesn't always work, sometimes they go off really fast. It's usually best to get them stuck on terrain. or around a corner/door.

Just waiting for Forge to officially release for 1.13.x to remove unneeded mobs from 1.13, like Phantoms, from the game because, in my gameplay based opinion, they add nothing of value to the game.
Fun fact: Clicking a bed every 30 minutes doesn't make you a better player, it makes you one who clicks a bed every 30 minutes. Wouldn't you rather just mod them out of the game completely?

I have been consistently throwing creepers back at least four full blocks. I just started a new world and I have nearly a stack of gunpowder and not a single creeper has gone off.

That's pretty much it. 4 times with iron should kill it IIRC.
Two or so hits and the ******* is dead.

hit
repeat
The knock-back will put it out of range, and stop it from setting off. You can simply continue this until it is dead.
Click super fast also works, if you have a diamond sword.
Also in (enchanted) diamond armor go ahead and try number 1. :wink.gif:

It does not always happen, but when it does, it goes something like this...
See Creeper closing in on me.
Back off and switch to bow.
Creeper chases, but I keep my distance.
Fire.
Hit.
BOOM!
WTF!?
LOL!!
I have never seen the knockback effect... I will test accordingly.
