What a disappointment, the Sky Dimension was replaced by The End.
Quote from Jeb_ »
It has been rebranded to be The End realm
Sky Dimension
Pros
- Possibly new blocks.
- Opposite of the Nether.
- Has amazing scenery.
- Gives beds another use.
- Allows us to easily build in the sky.
Cons
- Unwillingly being forced to the sky dimension from sleeping may be annoying.
- May have similar blocks from the Overworld.
The End
Pros
- New block.
- Boss Mob
Cons
- Difficult and annoying to build in because of the enderman.
- Dimension has a dark theme, similar to the Nether.
- Is very difficult to even get inside the dimension.
- Throwing eyeballs in the sky to find a stronghold which contains boxes that eyeballs must be placed into in order to activate the portal is too far-fetched.
- Requires the use of a portal like the Nether.
- Dragon would fit better in the Overworld or the Nether than in The End.
Just wondering, is the Sky Dimension still going to be released or was it converted into The End? I'll update the post with my opinion once I get a legit answer.
The end is the "completed" sky realm. So yeah, sky realm is scrapped. Lots of people are pretty disappointed that we won't ever get sky realm. I give it half a page before someone says something about Aether while missing the point that aether isn't sky realm.

That's unbelievable. The Sky Dimension wasn't even finished but it still looked better than The End.
This has been asked many times before. And although the following answer has been given various times, it's true: You can always just download the Aether. It's not exactly the "thing" for everyone, but it'll at least give you a new world to explore.

Originally we had our own working skylands generation which was completely custom-made. However, when Notch introduced his skyland generation into the files we used a lot of it since it was actually coded quite nicely. So yes, although it doesn't seem like it is, it's pretty much the Skylands in shape. However, it has plenty of other features to it such as dungeons, plenty of new creatures, and a various amount of unique items and blocks.
If the Aether mod is not your cup of tea, that's okay. But right now it seems that Notch is settling with The End as the floating dimension, so I'd say the Aether is your best bet.

Wait, skyland generator was in 1.6. Aether was released in 1.7. Why would you spend 6 months reinventing a known wheel?
The End = a little bit more fresh of an idea for another realm.
Sky Dimension = The Aether mod has already fleshed out just about everything you could do.
The End = a little bit more fresh of an idea for another realm.
Sky Dimension = The Aether mod has already fleshed out just about everything you could do.
Also...
Sky Dimension = reused blocks, basically just decent code for floating islands
End = Presumably will have more than just one new block. Notch himself has said it is technically in the game so he can work on it during the code freeze and it counts as bugfixes.

Aether is not sky realm. Aether is sky realm, boss mod, more creatures mod, enchanting mod, cape mod, more armor mod, stupid random new blocks mod, unnecessary amounts of new ores mod, etc.
Just because people want sky realm doesn't mean they want 15 other crappy mods along with it.

Honestly, I want more realistic items and blocks than fantasy ones. Fantasy blocks are not even that appealing. The new white stone block looks like a better textured sand block. I don't see why people are so excited about that. I mean, how can someone even build a house there? It'll just be too annoying to deal with.
But one thing you forgot: One of the pros for the Sky Dimension should be "Potential for many, many, many new blocks." And we're talking blocks added by the Aether mod and then some. We're talking wind-blowing blocks here. Blocks that focus light. Blocks that shoot magic projectiles when struck or powered. Blocks that even could summon electricity (black clouds). I mean, pretty much the entire community could think up 1 new block or mob for the sky dimension.
Now, on the other hand, who here could think up a useful block that could work in the End? Anyone? Cause I sure can't! Nothing that could also work in the Nether, anyway.

I'm sure that several notable (and average) members of this community would beg to differ.

How are any of the extra features in the mod "crappy"? The other features are what define the project, it's what's so appealing to others. Not floating islands which have nothing to do in them. Your argument is just as terrible as the complaint threads who say "The new 1.8-1.9 features have ruined the game!". They are optional features. If you just want a bunch of floating islands, then just don't use the other features of the mod.
Starting to get sick of some user's crappy vanilla-elitist attitude towards mods.
The Aether is a mod. Why am I required to install a mod? Who says Notch can't make what people already have made? It's not a unique idea, I could of thought of it. Anyone could of thought of it.
You are required to install a mod because Notch cannot simply create every idea the community thinks of. Let's say there were a thousand really good ideas that were made into mods, and would definitely benefit the game if they were added. Do you honestly expect Notch to add any of these? Sometimes he likes to be unique, very rarely does he recreate ideas that mods have already covered.
By your argument logic, I could say this:
"Why should I have to install a texture pack? Why doesn't Notch just create his own version of it! Anyone could have thought of it, I could of thought of it."
OR
"Why should I have to install an adventure map? Why doesn't Notch just create his own version of it! Anyone could have thought of it, I could of thought of it."
The End didn't replace the sky dimension, which was never in the game in the first place.
Rather, the choice was between developing The End or a sky dimension before gold release.
The sky dimension would have taken too much time to do properly, otherwise it would just be a big, boring world with nothing to do. In contrast, The End is a small dimension focused entirely on a boss battle. It has focus and purpose. Additionally, more time was able to be devoted to further developing the existing new features.
There is nothing about a sky dimension not being added in the future; I would expect it given the popularity of flying islands and how Notch is fond of such.
I think a lot of people were so big on the Sky Dimension because they saw the Aether and thought "Wow this is what it's gonna be like when Mojang does it"
So now that were not getting one their all sad.
I think they should realize it wouldn't of been much different from the Main world, just in the Sky.
Also people complain about how long it takes Notch to code stuff, if he had to waste all his time on something you could download with many more features, then people would complain that he is wasting time. Instead he scrapped it knowing that the Aether is the Sky Dimension with more features and uglier colors.

You said it better than me. Finally someone who understands the forum's logic...
IMO Mojang should just incorporate the Aether mod into the vanilla game. They did it with pistons, not much harm in doing it for something a bit more extensive.

It's ok, but not that amazing. It sure is not better than the sky dimension by far.
