For me with an i7 CPU, Minecraft only maxes one core (out of 8), which has never been a big deal performance-wise. What has always been troublesome for me is that Minecraft maxes the GPU on one of my video cards (NVIDIA 3xSLI) generating immense heat unless I crank up the card's fan. It maxes the GPU even on the world selection screen.
I don't know if it's Java or Minecraft's massively unoptimized code, but the primitive graphics of Minecraft puts more load on my GPU than any other game I have, even the previously mentioned Fallout: New Vegas on max settings.
To add credit against your post, minecraft is single threaded which means it can only use 1 core of your i7. Thus having a shitty i7 with a low clock speed will ultimately get out performed in minecraft by an old higher clocked CPU. ( This means a HIGH clocked single core cpu could actually out perform an i7 with a much lower clock rate )
And i didn't mean to double post, sorry about that -.-

When i see people ask "Will this be added to Minecraft ?"
My magic eight ball says
"Please try again later".
For me this is the single Best piece of news regarding beta 1.9 yet!
I, and many other people have been worried about the near 100% constant CPU usage that beta 1.9pre brought with it, especially for the 1.9pre servers... Hosting companies will shut you down fast with that going on.
Well; Jeb found and Fixed the problem today!
First, good find
To the rest of you exclaiming that its ******** that they aren't releases fast enough. I put my money that yo will be the same ones who are complaining when there are bugs because the release happened to fast. Just a guess...
To clarify, my earlier post was not meant to say that I am having performance issues - I'm not. MC spikes one core, but as I said, that's never been an issue performance-wise. I also am not having any graphical performance issues, but it does max one of my cards all the time, and of course it's never going to touch the other two. This doesn't cause performance problems either, but it is a curious oddity that creates a lot of heat which is unpleasant for both machine and operator who is sitting next to it. EVGA Precision makes it all better by dialing up the fan just a bit.
It's just one of those weird Minecraft things, and not intended to raise the ire of armchair technicians who act as if I've reported seeing a Yeti or something.
According to the details I read by Optifog's developer, Minecraft shouldn't use more than 256kb of ram. Yet somehow it slowly keeps eating more and more ram until on some system it'll max out and lag/lower fps/shuts down games.
Also if Jeb says there's a problem, then maybe his word is more trustworthy than most of ours here.
Edit: did they fix that problem with exp orbs lagging servers to death?

**BUZZ!!!** Wrong answer. Minecraft gets sent out amongst all 4 of my cores pretty evenly. Must be an Intel thing if programs are only using 1 core. Minecraft uses all 4 of my cores on my AMD machines.

I hate to break it to you, but it won't. A first generation i7 has a much higher IPC than say a pentium d. A 3ghz pentium d will still get slapped in the face by a 2 ghz i7. They don't even clock i7's that low, so you are completely wrong anyway.

nope, your wrong. That is windows evening the load onto all of the cores, silly goose.

kilobytes of ram? You and the optifog developer are out of your minds.
i for one have never had minecraft crash, i must have a special copy.

It has never crashed on my ancient single-core AMD system with XP either. ( Java 6 32 bit )
However; on a newer Intel Quad-core 3.xx GHz cpu with 4GB Ram & Vista 32 bit ( Java 6 32 bit ) (not my computer) it crashes from Java out of memory errors all the time when certain mods are installed. Those same mods never crash my old system. -- beta 1.8.1 is the highest version I have tried on this new system though, so I don't yet know how the 1.9pre's do on it. The 1.9pre's peg my old systems cpu to 100% though.

I'm going to guess he means 256 MB, I believe I've seen where the opti-author says something like that too.

Per Jeb's Tweet today.
* It sounds like there might not be another pre after 5 until they are ready to put out a "Release Candidate" later on.
** Someone has already reported still having the 100% CPU bug on a Macbook. :sad.gif: I haven't tested it yet myself.
