I want them for sheer exploration factor. Digging underground loses it's appeal when there's only 5 possible ores to find, gold and lapiz being completely useless and half of Minecraft users never touching Redstone. The game is called MINEcraft. Give us a reason to mine. There should be gold, silver, iron, tin, copper, lead, diamond, zinc, nickel, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and OIL. What if deep underground you hit a pool of oil just like you hit a pool of water. Make them completely scarce, make them a fuel source for smelting and others things. This game can be so much more but instead of improving what makes the game great, he is adding junk like "experience."
No, you aren't. I would like copper and tin as well, not sure about the other ones... using oil as fuel for furnaces would seem rather modern. Maybe rather create oil lighting as a better and more expensive option for torches instead?
What exactly would rubies then be good for, or zinc, lead, nickel, sapphires and emeralds? You will need to think of some uses for all of them if you want this thread to get anywhere...
It's not my job to be creative. It's my job to *****. I love mining and that's why I want them. I don't care what their function would be.
I would also love to see some new ores and such added.
I simply worry about adding too much to the game. If you keep adding and adding and adding you will eventually need a spreadsheet in front of you all the time just to remember the tiers.
They need a use here . . . otherwise I can't see any of these being implemented.
(By the way, experience orbs, might not actually be experience, because if they were, why would we drop ALL of them when we die? In my opinion they are probably currency to spend at villages)

If you look at Wurm online (Notch's other game he partnered) then you find there were a variety of more ores. Zinc is used for white dye, brass for more reflective lanterns, lead for boats anchors.
I just don't know if Notch wants to get that specific.
If there are new ores, none should be better than diamond as tools. None should be equal, either, unless they're equally rare. If there are enough new ores that it becomes difficult to find a healthy amount of any ores, we need something that allows ores to be fused so that they can be used in crafting together. Iron and some light metal could make steel, for example.
I'd like to see more ores added, sure. And we have redstone to point to if there come to be more otherworldly ores. Bluestone!

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
New Ores would be soooo nice. I never really use my gold, lapis, or redstone.
Let's get some other stufF: gems like rubies, emeralds, sapphires. Their uses can range from magical uses (enhanced swords perhaps?) to decorations for furnitures, maybe for thrones, chairs, etc.
Oil would be nice- could make lanterns that shine brighter than torches.

Your thoughts?
The game is called mineCRAFT. ;D New ores would be fun, for sure, but I'm much more interested in seeing what we already have available to us used more thoughtfully. The crafting half of this game is sorely under developed.

I agree, some of the ores mentioned have absolutely no use at all but I think adding a few that could be used (silver, copper, zinc, brass) would be pretty exciting. As for the experience orbs I think Notch said they're still thinking about what to do with them, I hope they aren't used for currency. I'd be pretty bummed out to be honest because there would be no point in gaining experience just to blow them all on items and stuff (unless of course there would be a skill NPC of some kind, but I highly doubt it).
My main concern with adding additional ores is with ore distribution. Average depth of the world is only 64 blocks, currently we have two easy to acquire ores two hard to acquire ores and two in between. If Mojang starts adding lots of additional ores they will either have to increase the rarity of the common ores or make the new ores somewhat rare. Otherwise we will end up in a situation where we find ores all of the time.
Adding ores for ores sake would be pointless. We already have two(really three) ores with limited use. Why don't we try to get Mojang to make them useful before adding more ores to the game.
If they did this, they should make certain regions spawn different types of materials. This gives more reason to explore and wont clutter up the current 40 blocks deep or whatever. I.e. Add in ruby / emerald / sapphire but have sapphire spawn in snow bioms, ruby in desert and emerald in swamps or something like that. Will give a nice exploration value to the game.
I love what they did to the biom coding in 1.8, makes everything of much more epic proportions

If Notch does expand the world's height like he hinted at, there should be more than enough room for new stuff. I don't know if that was confirmed or not, though.
I would love to see some knew forms of metal. I think 1.9 could have some great ways of putting new metals to use.
Building Materials Steel- Since it is made by combining iron and carbon steel could be made by giving iron and coal to a smithy in a town. He would have the materials necessary to combine the two into steel alloy. This could be used for stronger tools and armor. Possibly better minecart tracks. Copper- Used for pipes to draw up water or lava. Could be useful for drawing water for farming. Silver- Could be used for mirrors. A conductor for some sort of redstone circuitry advantage. Lightning rod? Zinc- I think this is an unnecessary addition. But if other people were to want it then it could be used as some kind of fuel. Zinc powder is often used as fuel for model rocket engines. If lanterns are added then this could be a very useful material for making them as it would burn very bright.
Currency Copper- Cheapest form of currency Silver- Mid tier currency Gold- Higest Currency
I don't think you could get much more complex then this or you risk making things very confusing. One final material I could see added is a type of crystal for the crystalline caves that were suggested by someone a while ago. I believe Notch was considering it. It would create colorful cave colors when light is shined on it. I haven't thought of any practical uses for it yet.

Good ones I've seen are:
Silver (Conductors? Mirrors?)
Copper (Pipes? Kettle?)
Zinc (Deoderant? Shampoo? Batteries?)
Brass (Zinc + Copper)
Lead
Sapphire
Emerald
Rubies
Steel (Refined Iron, but Why!?!?)
Moar gems for what exactly?

Second: Actually- I think the first part covers it.

Oil would be nice- could make lanterns that shine brighter than torches.
What does Runescape have to do with anything? I've never even played Runescape. This is about giving us a reason to be excited to mine again.

Even if they just have different durability and nothing else, it's always nice to be able to find new things!
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.
