Oh yeah, lots of people have. It's the only way to get good meat now.
Good set up, but the redstone/piston combo is not needed :wink.gif: but without it, it can take up more space,, if space saving is waht you are looking for then thats good,, and i have about 1 egg every 4seconds at the moment.....
But my design takes up a bit of space, and is double leveled :wink.gif: haha....
I only keep 4 chicken (or hen :tongue.gif:) in mine, and they produce more eggs then I need, got a double chest half-full already... Currently mostly living off bread: got a automated wheat farm producing 72 wheat each batch, not the biggest, but I found this to be just the right size. (plus a melon farm too, also automated)

This farm is very Overkill, but it was a test to see if the water would work and the pens, but on my main world i live off wheat, but this was just an idea for a multiplayer server with friends.
from around 30mins or so of this farm producing eggs i got a full chest of eggs + 21 cakes. hahahah
Its a bit hard to see in the pictures but there are 10 pens with at least 5 chickens per pen so thats at least 50chickens but im sure some have many more......
but im going to make a smaller version for my whole server to live off (friends) just perfect. :biggrin.gif:
IRON BARS!!! For some reason, chickens can get kind of trapped inside iron bars.
I'm stealing this pic from another poster from the Better Than Wolves forum, but it pretty much sums up all you need to know:
(just the part of the system at the front)
my current setup actually only uses a 2x3 grid of iron bars, as the chickens are only sent in one side of the system. it took a while, but once i got to about 20 chickens it increased by at least 1 every day. and it takes up only a total of 5x3x5 blocks, including a collection point. the one problem is that if the chickens don't get stuck right, their eggs don't get laid into the water and you have to walk up the the edge of the cage to collect them. so it's not the best for a completely automated system, but collection eggs once a day isn't a big deal, especially when it's just outside my house.
Does anyone know what specifically causes chickens to take damage in 1.8.1 when cooped up in water? In a 3*2 pen of water held up by signs, with any more than one chicken they slowly kill themselves off.
For everyone wonder why their chickens are dying, there is now a maximum number of mobs that can survive in a given number of blocks. I currently have 5 chickens in a 4x5 area, and a single chicken can survive in a 1x1x1 space.

This just can't be true. I have 3 pens with 20 chickens each in 3x1x3 areas and none die. I don't have any water in mine tho, so I'm guessing people losing chickens are having issues with water.
I went low tech with mine and just made the surface area of each pen 3x1, with a door coming up to the middle blocks, so all I have to do is walk up to the door and get all the eggs due to proximity.
That gets me 30-40 eggs anytime I check the pens, which is more than enough for my purposes.

This may be possible, but the specific restriction you speak of isn't consistent. In a 3*2 space in my design, I can't have more than 1 chicken. Is there any more thorough discussion on this in another thread? I glanced through the chicken farming thread in the survival forum but it's mainly everyone posting their designs.

Edit: typos
i am sure i have more then 10 chickens in that farm without them dieing.
and it is 2x5.
I've given up with chicken farming, I've made a large pen, tried many different designs and they all just die off. I don't know if it's because they are being made on an SMP server, but my pen goes from 6 chickens, down to 2 every time. the size is roughly 8 x 8 x 8. (give or take a block, but I made it much larger and more spacious than the designs I have seen in videos because my chickens keep dieing)
I actually saw a chicken stand perfectly still on a block of grass in a corner (I was redesigning it, chicken wasn't trapped at all) and then it just died for no reason at all.
Could it be biome dependent? I have my coop on a plains area, and it is built out of a raised dirt platform and an open-topped 4 block high "cage" made from fence posts. Are you using regular blocks to build your coops?

I'll try fences and see if I get different results. I used dirt blocks in mine however. Mainly for testing, but I was getting the same issue.
Does anyone know what the cause of damage even is? It seems like they're pushing each other into the blocks and causing suffocation damage. Unless there actually IS a hard-coded limit that causes them to slowly and randomly take damage. The only issue is that there is no real pattern to it, other than the chickens ultimately dying off.

If you don't want your mobs to "kill each other" in their pens, put them in water. You can have infinite number of mobs in a 1x1 area if there's a block of water in it.

Don't. Animals can glitch through fences, chickens included. Animals can kill each other by pushing each other into blocks, if there's not water in the pen. Put water in the pen and you'll be fine.

Mine are in water and they're still killing each other. It's also on SMP.

Then you're either doing something wrong, or you have them fenced in as well and they're glitching out. I've done tests on it and I've never had a chicken die in a water pen, and we're talking 2-3 thousand chickens.

What exactly am I doing wrong?
It's 2*3*7, closed in at the top. A side view:
Signs hold up the water which the chickens rest in, with a water conveyor that moves fallen eggs.
this may seem quite random but.... has anybody got a chicken/egg farm to harvest eggs and chicken ( for food ) to make cakes or to have chicken?
I made a test semi-auto farm where the eggs all come to the door of the farm so i walk in and collect all the eggs,, does anybody have a farm?
Has anybody even considered making one?
I can post a picture of the current set up if anybody is interested,, it could be made much better but this was just for fun :smile.gif:

Looks like someone is killing your chickens on your server, or you're miscounting. There's no way you'll get chicken deaths with that setup.
