With Minecraft 1.8, I was wondering if Iron, Gold and Diamond rareness are still the same. In my server, it appears that players are both getting both ends of the luck spectrum; some players are either finding tons of ore or no ores at all.
Has the rate of finding these ores still the same?
Are you finding yourself finding more or less ores?
I've noticed a lot more iron and coal on my part. Coal veins are commonly (even at the surface) 30-50, and combining with nearby veins. The largest amount of coal I got from one 'vein' was 212, and for iron, was 14 (but 8-12 are pretty common). I personally think iron should be more rare, as the transition of stone to iron tools is much too quick. I ended up finding iron before coal, and made a stone pickaxe specifically for retrieving the iron I found. It wasn't moments later when I dropped into a deep cave and found 12 diamonds over the span of two 6-diamond veins.
I don't have any hard evidence, but I keep ending up with tons of iron relatviely quickly. Somebody should run an analysis on the map again and see what the rates are.
In my case I think it's just more open space meaning we see it more instead of behind 200 blocks of stone on all sides! At least that's part of it! I don't know for certain. I know when I SERIOUSLY destroyed areas of land to mine(systematic digging out GIANT cubes of stone and dirt) I'd end up with the same amount of stuff, it just took SOOO much more time!
I don't have any data to back me up, but I don't believe that they are any more common.
However, they are easier to get. Abandoned mines are like huge pre-dug mines for you to go along and pick the resources off the wall. For every block you walk in the mine, you are seeing at least 12 blocks on the walls, and they often connect into a cave. Caves also seem to be more common. Both of these areas provide extremely easy to get resources, and allow you to quickly check blocks for ores. Before, caves were rather rare, so most of your time was a 4:1 efficiency rate digging. Now you can get a 12:1 efficiency rate walking in a mineshaft, and possibly 20:1 walking in a cave.

Everyone has seen the very numerous threads bashing the various features of 1.9, Notch, Mojang, etc. Can we turn down the hating? Just a little bit? Sure, everyone may not be pleased with enchanting, or potions, but really, is it at all realistic to expect that Notch will undo his work from the past several weeks and take these features out? One, that would infuriate far more players than it might pacify, and two, something like that is completely unprecedented in a game as popular as Minecraft. Complete feature removal? Forget about it. Nobody is forcing you to use enchantments and potions.
.
Adding an XP bar does NOT, I repeat NOT turn Minecraft into an RPG. An RPG, to quote the dictionary, is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting and take those characters through a structured narrative or structured decision making.
.
Fantasy elements are often found in RPGs, but the reverse is NOT true. Fantasy != RPG. XP bar + minor fantasy elements does not and WILL NEVER equal an RPG in Minecraft, since Minecraft is completely devoid of a plot whatsoever.
.
Finally, at the end of the day, you have to give Notch and Mojang some credit for what they have accomplished. Minecraft has over 3 million users. If Mojang was making bad gameplay decisions, why is Minecraft one of the most popular video games of all time? Because Mojang knows what they are doing. The success of Minecraft is testament to it.
.
tl;dr: If you cannot come up with a completely valid reason for claiming that 1.9 ruins Minecraft, please keep your mouth shut.

im calling bs on that 212 vein of coal. that is seriously very unlikely. pics or it didnt happen
I skimmed through the updated generating code, and it doesn't look like the amounts of ore being generated have changed. There is one critical difference, however. In the previous algorithm, ore deposits were biased upwards by 2 blocks, so instead of diamond having a natural range of 0-15, it had a natural range of 2-17, and put almost 100% of the generated ore above the bedrock layer.
Now deposits are biased DOWNWARDS 2 blocks, so diamond has a range of -2-13 instead. This puts about 25% of the generated diamond within or below the bedrock layer, where it won't be generated or accessible. It also eliminates most of the diamond that was being generated above the lava line at 10 blocks, so digging at Y=11 is about the highest level you could branch mine and still have reasonable chance of finding any diamond at all.
It would be interesting to see a statistical analysis of before and after.

If you bothered to read my post, you would notice that I was talking about merged veins being somewhat common. It just happened to be a large sum of merged veins. I don't have pictures because I never screenshotted it.

I have been digging at y=12 and have still found tons of diamond.
If the extra ore is an artifact of open space, then I would expect to get the same amount now as when I normally go spelunking. Exploring caves is my normal method, so having more caves to explore should allow me to explore for longer, not get more from a given period of exploration.

I don't think that the rate is higher, but the new caves are massive and make finding it a little easier. Except for Diamond, though. I haven't found too much of that.

Don't suppose you could go back and get us the seed + coordinates? It's not so much that I doubt you, just that I want to see for myself.
For me, it has seeming to be the same. Maybe even less for diamond. Still i always love when I am digging a tunnel from my spawn house to an npc villages. I love coming across Iron. I am like yes!!! NO MORE STONE PICK AXES!!!!!
I seem to be finding more ores in every category. Iron is as abundant as coal, and gold, lapis and diamonds are now in every lava level cave I find in good quantities.
Iron and gold do seem to have been increased, but I still haven't had a chance to make a mine at layer 16 for diamonds yet.
I only have a few that I've found around in mineshaft chests, and small groups of 4's

This is good, cuz your gonna burn up a lot of armor exploring.
I don't have to cheap out and use stone tools anymore either.

I do not remember the coords of the cave because it's been a couple weeks, but if you roam around, you should be able to find it from my spawn point.
