Its a beta. Who cares if they delay stuff. They went from 1 person making a game for thousands, to a handful of people making it for millions. Plus other platforms that they're working on, its just a ton of stuff for the what, 5 of them working on the game?
Usually I HATE complaint posts but yours is legit and well written. It's not the rage induced caps lock fest like 99% of them, with no valid points. I think everyone was a little disappointed, even the ones who are flaming and trolling you about having an opinion. Nothing anyone can do about it, but enjoy the good parts of the update and hope for a better 1.9 and full release. Thanks for having 2 brain cells to rub together. It's a shame most of the community doesn't.

Handful? jeb was the only person working on the project for two weeks, and usually it's only jeb and notch that work on the game.
the op is right, the update is disappointing, even if it does have a few good points.
blah blah it's a beta, blah blah. sure it's a beta, but beta's are supposed to be about bug fixes not adding game features. mojang is still trying to figure out what this game is supposed to be. they have had no development plan, and that's obvious. as a result, updates are sad and poorly thought out.
to all those that think you'll see a "finished" product released in november...
november's just when they get to start charging all the beta guys to finish the game.
notch - here's the finished product, now for the dlc, muah ha ha $$$$$$.
I said "Then, today, I see a comment on a minecraft video, that 1.8 was out. Wow! I quickly minimized my browser and went to Minecraft. I opened it up, and looked at the changelog. "

You have obviously never actually been in a real Beta before. And no "Open Beta" two weeks before a game launches doesn't count. Your argument is particularly feeble when you consider how many games add new features after launch.
Also Notch has been quite open about their being no solid development plan, as the plan has been to "launch" when it has enough features to be a game (and not just a sand box) and continue adding new stuff for years to come.
We are supposed to be testing a beta version. If you don't want bugs then wait for it to be released? If its buggy after release then you can spam the forums.
1.8 is out...
On topic: I'm never let down about any game anymore because ever since Fable/Fable 2 I learned to just not look at ANYTHING about the game or update so that I have zero expectations and every time I come to a new update or a new game I'm always happy because I didn't ruin my standards by following it 24/7. This way there is no opportunity for me to become unhappy about anything anymore.

Keep your expectations low and be happy forever.
I don't have much expectations of update.
But I didn't expect an update will make the game less fun and lag as hell.
How about the fact that I can't play this on regular Leopard Mac OS? No one with an older mac who could play this game no problem can anymore. What gives? Is a dynamic lighting system the only reason why we can't play anymore?
And don't tell me to get a new OS or a Windows computer, or Linux, cause I'm a hard worker who makes next to nothing, and Minecraft is one of my major forms of gaming, or at least at this point is was.
I hope that whatever it is that's keeping this game from being played on Mac OS 10.5 is fixed in the next micro update, cause I paid for this game, and I didn't pay not to play.
Notch ****ed up, I can barely play without a simple f key, b4 i switched fog every 30 seconds to stop lag now I have to go into the video settings and do it, after 2 hours you want to shoot yourself when doing that...

Hah such wisdom i wonder if you have ever heard of a discussion, it involves more than one person..
Seriously though agree with the OP you hit the nail on the head, also Beta's improve performance as they progress and most devs don't cave into ppl who spam forums demanding a patch or a release date of it when it is not even ready.

Have you tried F3+F to change the fog distance? It changes it for me.
I am also extremely disappointed. Filling the hunger bar is a pointless task, Endermen can pick up blocks you make, so they destroy your house, and you have to rebuild it. The grass color is awful, and there is less biome variety than before. Also, NPC villages can be annoying if you don't want them. There's a lot more than that that I'm annoyed with, but generally I think this is a step backwards for Minecraft. Arg.

Which to me is freaking awesome and what I have been wanting ever since I realised I could stop every mob in the game with a three block high dirt wall.
Yeah, AFTER they already promised all this and went through some delays. They still didnt deliver the original update as they touted it.

i was talking to jellyme. i forgot quote
Farlanders? What is that.... Oh, you mean Endermen.
Also, I don't mind all the stuff that was not added, there are many more releases to come and we are lucky to even try to Beta and even the Alpha.
Also, this:

Not everyone is having no fun.
Not everyone has Macs.
One small company can't please the whole world of people all at once.
Also you'd probably have money for a PC if you didn't overspend on Mac.

+rep to OP
I thought there was something different about the chests but couldn't quite put my finger on it.
"Toggle Fog is now F3 + F"

Having a high food bar allows your health to regenerate. It is carrot and stick.
Which to me is freaking awesome and what I have been wanting ever since I realised I could stop every mob in the game with a three block high dirt wall.
Which one? As every biome has a different tint.
No, they are just not stupidly small. Having a different biome every hundred blocks was silly.
Then turn them off in the world generation options.
