Is it just me, or has the 1.8 update simply made minecraft... Scarier?
I mean when I first saw an enderman it was like staring death in the face holding a grass block, then when I began scouring the globe for strongholds and mineshafts it just became worse. I am now very far from spawn, playing on easy and the one home I've decided to build has yet to have a roof over it.
It's not just that should I die, I could lose everything and never find it, it's that even regular travel and spelunking has become far scarier than it used to be. The worst thing I used to worry about were creepers and skeletons, maybe spiders, now there's a whole new slew of troubles, even wandering around about daytime I have to watch every step because several times now I've found myself barely teetering over the edge of a ravine and it's even worse when mining. I dread mineshafts now, they are great! Don't get me wrong, I was dying to find one at first, but those damned blue spiders are certain death and these things have really unsure footing for what used to be populated! I actually had a branching ravine through this mine and several times I have tried navigating my way only to become lost or miss a jump ever so slightly and fall a measurable distance. Not to mention the fact that you never know when a bug will cause some very bizarre and/or hazardous terrain. And don't get me started on vines...
I can barely get the courage to do what I used to do so regularly on multiplayer servers, perhaps the cure will be the presence of others, perhaps it's the beloved /sethome command which I desperately need. Maybe I'll be happy when the terrain becomes second nature and predictable again.
Don't get me wrong, I love it, I just fear death so much now I can barely get anything done! Notch should make a horror game, he'd be good at it.
Just my short commentary, just wanted to see if others feel this way as well.
I personally find it no scarier than before. As I type this I am playing Minecraft, sitting in my house (also without a roof on it) on easy. It isn't paused because I am smelting through the night.
To try and lower your fears, forcibly expose yourself to elements of the game. Make a new world, find some Endermen, and go stand near them. Just avoid looking at them. Same with other things. Find a ravine or a mine shaft and just go for it.

True the game is a lot harder now then it used to be.
And Endermen are far worse than zombies and skeletons. If they are worse than creepers it would be a no from me. Nothing can beat a creeper ... except maybe Han Solo.
Started new world. Found a shallow cave leading to a mineshaft which then intercepted a ravine. while trying to build a bridge across, a blue spider leaped at me and sent both of us tumbling into the dark. I landed in water while I saw the spider go splat on the ground. Poisoned I see my life tick away tell I had half a heart and the poison relented.
So with barely a handful of wood, a almost dead stone pickaxe and a bakers dozen of torches I pushed my way out of the torrent of water from which I landed as my health slowly regenerated. Dug a hole in the bottom of the ravine and made a door.
I live in my tomb.
I slay spiders, creepers, spiders, skeletons, spiders, zombies and more spiders.
And I have plenty of rotten flesh to eat.

And then the Enderman walks into your field of view and in your panic, you run back into a Creeper. Your panic doubles but causing you to be too inaccurate with your sword to hit the Creeper as it starts hissing. You turn around to run away but the Enderman is there, cutting off your escape just long for the Creeper to detonate and kill you.

They are the easiert mob to kill , you hit them once , and they just teleport , so , if you hit him fast , he wont ever hit you , not even once , enderman are just teleporting zombies , and i am no tsaying that because of the sound , because they have minor AI , and the addition is that they can take blocks and teleport.
Probably the other stuff you mentioned are actually scary , i am always scaried of dying because i dont want to lose my stuff.
But well , we will have to take risks if we weant that rare loot.

Should have been looking down. And even if the Enderman did walk into your field of view, the rest could have been avoided by not panicking.

You see a Enderman at the end of a loooong tunnel in an abandoned mineshaft. He is now teleporting towards you block by block. When he gets to you, you're ****ed. Panic?
I am WAY more cautious now while traveling and mining than I was before, that's for sure. I seem to always be falling anyways. Also I get scared of running out of food. So I spend like 2 MC days in a row tending to my farm.
I find Minecraft to be very paranoia-inducing, even on Peaceful [which I almost always play]. The mobs themselves are not super scary, and usually there is a simple strategy to deal with them [a cave spider's poison can't drain your health completely if you're fed; Endermen are creepy but weak to water and generally fragile, etc]. However, it's the thought of a creeper sneaking up behind you or a monster popping out while you're mining in a cave that gets to me. Every now and then when I venture into a cave on Peaceful, I still get the eerie feeling that one will spawn even though it's impossible.
I remember when the Halloween update came out, I decided to play on a normal difficulty to get the full effect. I hardly ever came out of my house that day. lol
Funny thing is, when I'm playing on an SMP server, having to deal with mobs is not so bad. Annoying, but not terrifying. However when I'm exploring on my own, the darkness can get to me sometimes.

Which means that if you kill the spiders, hide and block yourself, you are safe.
as long as you are well fed....
MUAHAHAHHAHA

If you're so scared of the spiders either fight 'em or play on peaceful when exploring abandoned mines or until you have your home set.
I usually play on peaceful til I find a good location for my house because I take quite some time and keep looking til I find the perfect spot.

LMAO! This actually made me burst out laughing. Thank you Cassie.

Fill your hunger bar, grab your bow, and you're the Champion of Minecraftia.
I agree that the terrain is much more dangerous, though. Ravines... So many deaths...
