If this is the case, I must say I'm pretty disappointed. The things I've been looking forward to most in Minecraft's future are better farming, and animal husbandry. If seeds don't occur naturally in the world, same as apples and cocoa beans, it takes away from the survival aspect significantly, at least for avid farmers like myself.
I really hope this is just a temporary solution, and we'll be able to acquire seeds through more natural means. Of course, I'd love to be able to obtain apples and cocoa more naturally, too.

C'mon, where my farmers at?!
Melons are some pretty powerful healing devices, infinitely spawning and giving between 3 and 7 hunger.
I don't see how what I said was confusing. Each melon "source" will pop out a melon in an adjacent spot, and each melon when destroyed drops between 3 and 7 melon pieces. Each piece gives you 1 hunger, so you get between 3 and 7 hunger from one melon.

I didn't know any of that, thanks for responding :biggrin.gif:
what's your source? I didn't read any of that on the wiki

After 10:30 PST, my IQ drops to around that of a shovel, please disregard anything I say after aforementioned time, it will likely not make any sense, and is best ignored.
How does it take away from the survival aspect if the only way of getting melon seeds is exploring dungeons?
I think that is actually pretty nice. If melons were everywhere, it would be no challenge to get them.
And that's something Mojang want to add to Minecraft. Challenge.
I guess I just find it a little.. "immersion breaking" when you can't just find plants and seeds in nature to start up your farm. I can respect melons being rare, but if you find a pumpkin in the wild, you should be able to get seeds from it. Finding seeds only in chests feels like a bit of a cop-out.

if you don't mind, could you give us your ideas on how to get these pumpkin/watermelon seeds?
a drop from the actual pumpkin/watermelon wouldn't work, it'd get exploited like gravel/flint
and I know none of us want that

It takes a while to grow though, and restoring 1 hunger at a time is not very advantageous with the long eating animation. Wheat seeds are very easy to get, and bread is a good source of food. So I don't see why being able to gather melon seeds would be unbalanced.

When the melon breaks it should drop melon pieces and like 1 - 2 seeds, that fixes the flint/gravel exploit and with pumpkins make them fully break after being picked up and dropped multiple times.
I think they should be farmable, I mean seriously you can make massive wheat fields for infinite food that gives you seeds at exponential rates so why not melons.
Melons are some pretty powerful healing devices, infinitely spawning and giving between 3 and 7 hunger.
Or you could just kill a single cow and get 4.5 hunger uncooked. Much less work, much more common, and completely destroys the argument against making melon seeds more common. (Also, mushrooms)
Pumpkins and melons really should both be craftable into their respective seeds. Maybe 2 seeds per pumpkin and 1 seed per melon slice?
This is the sort of thing I'm talking about. You should be able to get seeds from them without it being exploitable like gravel (such as placing/destroying the block repeatedly until it drops seeds.)
In Xie's farming mod, you can break pumpkins and melons with a hoe to get the seeds instead of the fruit. I think that's a pretty fair solution, too.
I did not, however, realize that one melon seed would grow endless melons from the one source. That's news to me.
*FACEPALM* Have you guys completely forgotten, that this is only an early release? The 1.8 early release is only out. To make the community test it for bugs and glitches for Notch, Jeb and rest of Mojang.
This is not at all the final version of 1.8 and not at all the final version of the adventure update. The adventure update is made up in 2 parts. 1. 1.8 which adds all the stuff and some bug fixes from 1.7.3 The other part is 1.9 which is bug fixes from 1.8 and additionally other stuff, which is missing but promised to be released in 1.8
This includes Stronghold bosses, NPC's, a use for "EnderPearls" and additionally the fixed farming. So don't ***** out that there is no legit way of getting it, when 1.8 isn't even officially released. Now excuse me, I'm going to hunt endermens. Their week point is their freezing when looking at them, it makes them vulnerable.
I just wondered if this was their temporary solution or a permanent one, that's all. If this is something that will be added in the official release, then awesome. But given how long cocoa beans and apples have remained chest items only, I'm worried seeds will end up exactly the same way.
