Now, I must confess that I'm not exactly taken with the current look of the mushrooms.
You may or may not be aware, but Jens has stated recently that there are plans to make the mushrooms look "more epic" in the future. Source: http://twitter.com/#!/jeb_/status/109134683320745984. (This information may be found in the sticked threads in this section too)
Thus, given Notch's remark in the Reddit thread, it may well be possible that in a future update mushrooms will look somewhat similar to the mushroom in the above picture. If so, I'll certainly be reconsidering travelling too far from spawn in my newly generated 1.8 world, since I'd much rather have forests with that awesome looking mushroom than the designs we have now!

Good thread, and offers decent alternatives. While not 1.8 exactly, it refers to a 1.8 addition, and is very well written. *thumbs up*
Just thought of something cool that can add a thrill to the game and probably won't be added to the game.
Embed a monster spawner in the stem of a "super mushroom". Creepers are the only mobs that we know of that are still aggressive in the daytime without dying, but players might not find it worthwile to find a big mushroom if there will be craters all over the place. Other mobs could work too. The canopy of that giant mushroom keeps that vicinity dark.

A mob I always thought would go brilliantly with the mushroom forests is Kodaichi's Fairy Queen (plus her minions, of course!). After 1.8 is released, I'd love to see the mod be altered so that fairies spawn exclusively in mushroom biomes.
I always thought of these giant Mushrooms as sticky, and vile goo leaking plants, and gave birth to Slimes. No idea why... just looked neat to think of green goop leaking from under them, and forming into sentient gelatinous life. :tongue.gif:
I am all for large epic mushrooms, but only a few per biome, small basic shrooms are good, maybe tweaked from what they are now, as long as there is a large forest it should look pretty cool.
How about a different coloured grass shade to go along with the shroom biome?

In the newer pics of the mushroom biome, there are a lot of normal mushrooms alongside the giant ones, and the grass is brown.

Nice, hopefully I can texture the grass more blueish ala Terraria :smile.gif:
I picture a shroom forest as made up from many tree sized shrooms, a few large shrooms like the big trees we already get and a handfull of epic large shrooms like in the OP. And lastly legions of normal shrooms everywhere.
Now, I remember several weeks ago someone posting an image of a giant mushroom of their own design to Reddit:
Shortly afterwards, Notch himself actually responded to the Reddit thread with:
"Yeah, I'm stealing this. :wink.gif: Very nice. :smile.gif:"

Shroomy enough for me!

If the sharp edges were rounded out, it would be perfect! Great job!
Perhaps that could be the largest mushroom that could grow. Much like a big tree.
