- Decoration
- Gives a spot for cakes to be placed
- Makes cakes more accessible
- Would make houses look less of a cluster
- Will offer more vision than a regular block
- Would produce less darkness than a regular block
- Could offer bonuses
Possible Table Bonuses
- Tables will be similar to a chest but would instead only hold one item at a time. Any item placed inside the table's inventory will be displayed on top of it. (Aavri)
- Cakes placed on top of a table will replenish extra hunger when eaten. (Skingrad)
My Position: Quit having us make all these workaround tables and give us a craftable table that actually looks nice and does what it's intended to do. I don't want these pressure plate tables in my NPC villages. They don't even look nice and a pressure plate shouldn't belong on top of a fence. Take your time and stop cutting corners developers.
A piston table offers more than what we're getting. So why even bother having pressure plate tables to begin with? We could at least put a cake on a piston unlike a pressure plate table.
Pressure Plate Table
Pros
- Decoration
Cons
- Nothing can be placed directly on top of them
- Unable to stand on them if there is two empty blocks from the ceiling to the table since the fence counts as two whole blocks
- Negates the purpose of a pressure plate, which is meant to be stepped on
- Isn't even a real craft
- Table has holes inbetween each pressure plate when trying to make a larger table
New Table Block
Pros
- Decoration
- Can stand on them if there is two empty blocks from the ceiling to the table
- Cakes and all other blocks can be placed on top of them
- Is an actual craftable block
- Are able to make a large table without having it to look disfigured
Cons
Would have no cons since it would be designed as intended by the developers.
Well I'm back from my vacation and I've seen this pressure plate table was surprisingly implemented. So I feel like I had to bump this thread with a picture showing how flawed the table was.
What a disappointment notch, cutting corners made me an unsatisfied customer.
I don't agree with all of your cons, or pros really, but what I will say is that I think pressureplates on tables is very work-around-y. Nearly all Minecrafters have "chairs" and "tables" in all of their houses. It's about time we get real chairs and tables.

do you know how to get to the Netherlands other than a portal
if you don't like the pressure pad + fence combo, then don't use it. Use a piston if you prefer that.
I don't want to see these "work-around" tables in my NPC villages. Like Korimito said, we need some real furniture and not some lame work arounds. Hope they're not going to be permanent.
Use what you prefer. Why do you need a thread about it?
It's to show the best possible table in the game currently, which is the piston table. With that, it doesn't compare to the new table we will be getting made out of a fence and pressure plate. Only fans will think it's better, but in reality, it has very little to offer. Just saying it's a lame addition and the developers should stop slacking and make an actual table in the game.

It's just a way to put a pressure plate on a fence. I'd focus all my energy into getting table blocks added if I were you and drop the whole hatred for pressure plate tables. Some people like them, some people don't.

I would rather have actual tables and chairs than pistons OR pressure plates. I agree 100%

Notch: But that'd require worrkkkkk, and I've already spent 50.6% of this year on vacation, don't you think I deserve a little more? I mean, your getting 1.8! Kind of
In the new 1.8 update, we're going to have the new pressure plate tables. These tables can exist if you have a bukkit server and the table plugin. Since I've had this plugin before, I'll show you why it's pointless to implement this feature and how pistons can easily replace these tables anyway.

I don't want these workaround tables in my NPC villages either. They don't even look so nice and a pressure plate shouldn't belong on top of a fence.
Pressure Plate Table
Pros
- Decoration
Cons
- Nothing can be placed on them
- Unable to stand on them if there is two empty blocks from the ceiling to the table since a pressure plate counts as a whole block
- Pressure plates are meant to be stepped on
- Isn't even a real craft
Piston Table
Pros
- Decoration
- Can stand on them if there is two empty blocks from the ceiling to the table
- Cakes can be placed on top of them
- Is an actual craft
Cons
- Requires to be activated with a redstone torch
- Under the table has a slight hole
New Table Block
Would have no cons since it would be designed as intended by the developers.
While sort of whiny rather then passive-constructive, I do agree it is... work aroundish. But it comes down to this, or nothing. Jeb did it out of kindness, so we can't complain, just hope he gets around to a real table model in 1.9 or 2.0(?).

Though your post gives good details, kudos.
Squeeky door gets the oil. If you don't complain, **** never gets done. People really should post in this thread if they don't like work arounds, it at least attempts to get a damn point across to Notch, who seemingly just doesn't care for MC like he used to.
Im greatful Jeb listen's to the community though. He's been striving to get nice things we acutally want added.
I thought you know, sense it was a payed beta, or input was going to mean something.
Yeah, let's fill up the limited number of available block IDs with useless decorative ****.
Oh ****, your right! Why should notch fix the damn issue with limited block ID's? Its obviously going to become a problem, but lets keep putting it off.
It's not useless, where else should we put cakes? On the floor?
On a piston, a dirt block, a wood block, on the wall, a cobblestone block, in the air, a stone block, a netherrack block... (lists every block i nthe game)

I have removed my bias remarks.
A table block would be nice, though.

Which are all workarounds for a table.
