Honestly I don't know WHAT to expect. I'm just so used to the normal hand swing. I'll say one thing I hope for is kicking, like the power kick from Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm and Duke Nukem 3D. And shoes could have another purpose instead of, well armor. Maybe you guys have a bigger imagination, or just cold hard facts about the new combat, maybe tweets from Jeb or Notch.
Well if you ask me we need the improve on long distance fighting.
While yes we have the bow, I wish we had more.
Like the current bow could be a 'short bow' and there could be a 'long bow' that each show has to be charged, but it could go like x3 times the distance. Also, throw-able spears would be awesome as well.
Second. Blocking would be awesome. The problem is that you would never know when to block since the creeps (zombies, spiders especially) don't really have fight animations...
This is going to be changed very soon, perhaps even in Beta 1.8.
I wouldn't be surprised if we received blocking, Mojang has expressed a desire to implement it.

Mmm.. But you know when they're about to hit you. When they get too close just block.
I personally don't see what good will come from blocking outside of PvP. The current mobs are too weak and basic to really need blocking. Unless we get bosses which are super tough or hostile mobs are able to block as well, blocking isn't serving any special purpose for single player.
im hoping for more animations, zombies and spiders just kinda run into you, it looks pretty dumb to me. also i want shields and different damage for hitting different body parts.

Well I heard somewhere that there were bosses in the ravines or something. And maybe there will be AI bump-ups.
I used Combat++ and blocking was pretty pointless but it was fun to use, just because I can.
And I don't want to grind and level up so I can mine better things, otherwise I'd resubscribe to Runescape.
Haha... "Grinding and leveling up" in Minecraft IS mining better things. The mining is the grinding and crafting what you mined is 'leveling up'. Anything more is superfluous, unless there was a serious combat overhaul.
I'm totally stoked for blocking! I'm also hoping, along with sprinting, Notch implements the ability to climb (two blocks above).
In regards to skill levels, I personally don't think it would have much use to the current Minecraft system. I would hope (if skill levels were implemented) that item restrictions wouldn't be implemented though, I don't see what skill levels can do other than improve certain harvesting speeds or unlocking new abilities or achievements.

I had an interesting idea about this.
What if the world can only render certain features if you're over a certain level?
For example, dungeons only render at level 10, giant mushrooms only render at level 20, strongholds only render at level 30. Materials, too. Pumpkins at level 20, clay at level 30. This would restrict crafting to some degree, but not to an extreme extent, and I would have fun leveling up. This probably won't happen, but it's not a BAD idea.
(The example levels are completely hypothetical and don't reflect game balance at all.)

I like the idea, but it supports the restriction of exploration which MineCraft is all about.

I'm not one for grinding endlessly to get something or do something, that should be left in MMOs.
If skills and leveling were to be added, it should raise efficiency of doing things. I'm not talking about reducing chances of failure to harvest wheat and stuff like that, but more like getting more than 1-2 seeds when harvesting wheat, or mining faster, etc.

Your idea, ironically, is more apt for an MMORPG.
Upgrading the effects of what the player can do, fits well with role-playing.
Upgrading the terrain and your surroundings as you level up, seems more suited for a sandbox game, at least to me.

they are adding those
of course its a bad idea
