I've been looking into server hosters, and I keep seeing "....30 player slots..." .
Do they really control the amount of players you can have on at a time?
If they don't, then I require some info/help.
If i had 1 gb of RAM what would the maximum amount of players i could have on at one time, and have minimal lag?
I don't mean to flame or offend, but I would really appreciate it if you answered honestly, because i know that some people well give mis-information, in an attempt to make some one pay more, when they really don't need to. (which kind of takes away the hole aspect of "dedicated host", or "real deals" because you're taking advantage of the lack of knowledge of the customer)
If you are looking at 1gb of ram you can properly fit about 25 players without lag and a couple of plugins. You have to take into consideration the amount of players with the amount of plugins. No plugins you could probably do 30 without lag.
And as far as the hosting companies controlling how many players you have. Unless they have it manually set up so that only 30 player slots are allowed than you can have unlimited.
It's an IP on port 25565 so you don't need to type it out like if your was 1.658.421.78:2280 you could get the port "gone" by getting the dedicated IP for your server. Other than that it's nothing "special" with it, so I just skip the usual $2-3 a month fees that comes with those.

What?
so if I had a server called playmcallthetime (theoreticaly) if the ip wasn't dedicated, to join someone would have to type 1.938.3839 (blah balh blah) to join instead of just putting us.playmcallthetime
As said above, dedicated IP means only your server is running on the IP. In many instances hosts have a few Ips and allocate multiple servers to these IPs, so you end up with:
If you purchase a dedicated IP you are the only one assigned that IP, as such:
10.0.1.1:25565
Since 25565 is the default port users don't need to enter a port to connect. As always you can setup DNS records so you can connect with a domain. You can also setup a SRV record so users can connect to the server without entering a port, even if you use a non-default port.

What are the benefits of having dedicated over non-dedicated??
They would have to type the IP+port and dedicated IP gets rid of the port so they would only need to type in the IP. If you want a domain you have to pay for that and setup that I think.
Now, would having to type that much into the ip bar deter them from joining my server?
What they type would look like this correct? 192.2929.292 us.playmcallthetime.com

Other than skipping entering the port I don't believe there are any actual benefits.
So if it was not dedicated, what exactly would they have to type? (If the ip thingy was us.playmcallthetime.com)
Usually it's not that much (normally hosts charges 2-3 bucks a month) because they have to pay the registrar+profit margins.

Is it worth the extra money to get it dedicated?
