I'm curious about your thoughts on what makes a Minecraft Host a winner to you. There is a plethora of hosts out there, all scrambling for our business. Why chose host "A" over host "B"? I have run several servers and I've come to see the value in customer service over pricing. I would happily pay a little bit more if I knew that the support was their when I needed it.
But that's just me, I want to hear your thoughts. What do you look for in a host? Is it their pricing? Is it their customer service? Is it their plans? What makes you choose a certain host over another?
Hardware, ticket replies, grammar, support methods, prices, promotions, plan names, suppoer types, FTP or SFTP/SSH. I need a lot, I know
We all need most of those things, but I'm wondering which of these makes you choose one host over another? For example, if host "A" had lower prices but poor ticket reply times, and host "B" had slightly higher prices but fast ticket reply times, which would you choose? Why?
I'm trying to get at what makes people choose one host over another.
I'd die without support. People should consider that.
I would die if a host doesn't have enough of these qualities
honesty
care
dedication
to their customers
And some people have no idea what it took for me to get a host that would yield such qualities in adequate quantities. Thanks god "heating", persistent, and patient got me what I wanted.
Good question. If it was me searching I would first look at how long they have been in business. Tonnes of minecraft host's go under in a short period of time, so I would stay away from startup's. My next move would be to see if they were overselling. I would ask for some disk i/o results from the machine I would be placed on (Would want the specs too). I would also need a VPS with ssh/sftp. I like full control of my server and I can also keep tabs on the node's performance to make sure I'm getting what I paid for. There's probably more I would look at but these things just stand out for me.
If you're like me, you like to deal with a fast, friendly, and fun support team. I like professionalism, but I don't like boring. Especially in the gaming business.
I like hosts that undersell their services and run on modern hardware. I consider modern hardware any Intel Xeon E3-V2/E3-V3, E5/E5-V2 or AMD Opteron 6200/6300-series. Basically anything released in the last 2-3 years, as I know most of them are capable of delivering the performance that I as a gamer demand from my host.
I like hosts that tell the truth and are as transparent as possible while still running a legitimate business. Hint hint - Read the Terms of Service before you buy anything. Sometimes hosts sneak a little something something in there that will come up when you're requesting that refund or that cancellation and you're left wishing you had read them before you accepted them.
That's my two cents. Make of it what you will.

Most are. In fact, I think all are. But many prefer to make profits off you - giving you four to five year old L5 series CPUs (or even older!) which are now approaching or after their official "End of Life."

Web designer and developer, @ConnorPeet. Opinions and views are solely my own.
Usually, if I ever go to buy dedicated minecraft hosting, there are a few things I look for.
- The first is value for money. I know the usual response from hosts around here is "Oh, you get what you pay for". This absolutely does not give you any good reason to charge an arm and a leg for your hosting.
- The second is a fast setup time, with minimalistic downtimes, and in the case of an extended downtime, you should receive a the time you lost back for free.
- Optional support which is worth the money. I don't need support, ever. There are others that do, allow us to choose and make damn sure you're not charging ridiculous prices for it. I'd imagine it should be about 10-20% the price of your hosting, depending on your package.
- Another thing I really like to see is support for lots of payment options.
- Another thing that I like to see, but have yet to, is support for development builds. Really, this is something that just Astounds me. When there is a development build out, there are at least a few things you can do, yet most hosts just leave their customers high and dry. I mean, if you understand any kind of java, you're at least able to say "Your server is spring OOM errors, this is because you are on a development build, suggested actions: x,y,z,swap back to an Rb/BB" etc.
- Lastly, I support any host that uses small node sizes. 128gb/64gb server nodes are usually terrible.
This is basically the market we want to be an active part in. Good hardware with minimal downtime and cheap prices, but, minimal support.
It really just depends on what type of host you need. If you want a host that will hold your hand and give you reply's to tickets within 1 hour go with a more expensive host like DigitServers or MinecraftServerHost.

Not always.. You can yield some great things even if a host is in the "bargain bin". You know what they say? You should not judge a book by it's cover.

You just don't understand, do you?
If you pay $7 per month for a server you can not get $150 worth of support.

That what the market want the customers to think that the case to make support have a "cash value". You can get the support you need without the extra butt load of cash if you really strive to get it. I know for a fact the market place doesn't like a lot of unhappy customers about or those that "heat" the place up by a lot so then new competitors need to deal with those needs that existing providers are not meeting if they going to "beat" them and survive as a business against the existing providers. Diversity is what make free enterprise ticks. It's just like a two negatives equaling a positive.

I'm seriously glad that you found a host that works for you (You claim they have "better support", even though I know multiple hosts you've tried in the past DID try to help you fix your broken, unstable modpack and make your server run better, including us.) - But you have to understand that you're going to get better performance AND generally better support from a company that charges more. It's just the general "way of the world" in the hosting business.
You can't go around and call every other company bad like you do so often in Hosting Requests threads, because a lot of the companies you are "reviewing" are excellent and extremely well-known hosts. I personally know many of them DID try to help you with your modpack at the time, yet you still dumped them and immediately started reviewing many of them badly. Trust me, I've seen some parts of the tickets and PMs shared with you.

It's too bad you had to be so vocal in order to be heard. Seems like a good host would pay attention to the people paying their bills - the customers
Yea I wished it was that easy to get a host like that. But like at my school some time you need to do that to get what you need.
