When Scrypt ASICs come out it will be restocked at normal prices, but that won't be for a few months.
Slightly off topic, but IIRC one benefit of the Scrypt protocol (or whatever it's called) is that they can change it's RAM requirements. While almost every computer will be fine, it will screw over most ASICs.

Proud member of the MCF AWA war of '13! if someone suggests Alienware or Cyberpower, wait for a custom-built list from someone who knows their stuff. Meh Rig
No, you don't. The GPU itself is not powerful enough that it would benefit from 4GB, and on top of that the memory bus will be a huge bottleneck.
Except it's out of stock.
Obviously you will find 280X's cheaper than 770s, the MSRP is even lower. But with the Litecoin surge going on all of the ones under $400 are out of stock, if you haven't noticed.
You don't need a 4GB 770.
It does not "go down at times", it goes down when there is large enough of a supply or small enough of a demand that sellers will want to lower prices.
By the looks of it, that is going to take a while, at least until the Scrypt ASICs hit the market.
Neither will you notice the difference between 2GB and 4GB for something like Minecraft.
If you just want to play Minecraft just get a 270X, as people have been saying quite a lot in this thread.
You have no idea how supply and demand work, do you?
It will not be restocked for a long time at that price. Obviously it will be restocked, but at $400+ prices.
When Scrypt ASICs come out it will be restocked at normal prices, but that won't be for a few months.
You did a crap job of reading the thread...
I said previously that I want to get into more pc games later on.
I will wait for stock
Litecoin surge sucks, but looking around helps
2gb on 1440p isn't enough for modern games, I also said that I may do dual display in the future, not necessarily for gaming but possible
Prices fluctuate at times, when the prices get too high, people stop buying
then the price will drop a bit
Scrypt ASICs will never happen...every scrypt coin is differnt enough to make it not work universally.
I said I will be getting in to other games in the future.
If you had read the previous posts on the thread, you would have got that.
upon further research elsewhere, I will end up getting the r9 280x...
...while I can get a 780 for only $40 more than the 280x, The 280x has twice as much vram which helps with multi monitor and other uses that just came up...things change quite a but...
---
however, for anyone else, I would suggest getting the cheapest 280x or 770 4gb or 780 3gb you can find.
get the cheapest of those three and you'll have a great card for just about most games...
there is ever so slight chance that certain 780 models will drop below the 4gb 770 models...though this is rare.
certain games run better with the 280x...especially with 1440p, at 1080p it does not matter as much...a few titles will run at gtx 780 speeds...though far and few...
so search a site like pcpartpicker and compare...make sure it's in stock, and that the prices don't fluctuate after you open the page...
even with multimonitor, 3gb will be plenty for years to come...I just found out I needed more for my specific usage.
DO NOT GET A GPU WITH ONLY 2GB OF VRAM! MODERN GAMES ARE BEGINNING TO NEED MORE, and it lowers the future usage of the card.
I got cornered to the 280x anyways...and this specific one isn't cheap...but hell...better be the best damn $469 I ever spend...
...so at the 770 4GB is cheapest at this moment...wait for a price dip for either though...they seem to have been flipping about...
----------
This is my mostly unbiased view here, get whatever...just make sure it is a good brand...avoid MSI unless you don't mind replacing the thermal paste...then it would be a beast card...great heatsink...crap paste...
This is my take on the situation and I think I have made my decision, I will be getting a 6gb MSI R9 280x, it is usless for normal gaming and no one should buy it if they are ONLY gaming...specific usage calls for that much vram...
HELL, 4gb is pretty much good enough for 4k/2160p...a resolution people won't be playing at for years...6gb would be a waste even then...
Yet another stubborn TS. A 770 can't even utilize 4gb of vram. Which is why nvidia ref models had 2gb. 6gb of vram is entirely unnecessary. A 280x with 3gb of vram will handle 2 1440p just fine as long as u are not gaming on both of them.
It will handle 3 1440p screens, seems to be a lot of misdirection as to how much vram you actually need. The answer: nowhere near as much as you guys are saying.

there is like...a $100 diff between the 770 4gb and the 780...(._.) if you have the hundred dollars then go get it...otherwise...ehhhhhh...
But i'll no longer just be gaming...this is a workstation, like I said, but I never intended before to have a gpu for anything...but now I have to have one ... can't get chintzy with that...
but the r9 280x can use it's 3gb rather well...I just said the 770 4gb because some games use more than ...maybe not on multi monitor...but in general...
a 780 would be better because it's a higher end card and has 3gb stock...but it also cost more.
LOL at fanblasting. Just no.
Just trying to help. A community chat is fine, I don't see it harmful at all. Others opinions matter, especially if they bring on some facts.
Karlzhao pretty much said it all. If you aren't going to give good reasons for why you 'need' more than 2gb of ram (and no, I just need it isn't a good answer) then you might as well stop replying to the thread because we're going to keep telling you that you don't need more.
Either give us some reasons or just go buy a 3gb 280x and be done with it. This thread really shouldn't have taken more than a couple of pages for you to decide.
reading what you just typed gave me chest pains...
Stop being all offended by my choice...
I'm talking about rendering others material...and some my own... but mostly others.
Most of the 3D rendering on this workstation would be CPU bound...Being dual Xeon I think it fits
Video will be GPU bound; both converting the 3D to a different format and rendering plain video in Adobe
I AM BUYING THE R9 280X BECAUSE IT FITS WHAT I NEED IT TO DO!
I'll play games nicely AND it is sutable for rendering, with the high vRam amount.
Stop suggesting the DAMN 780! 3gb won't be enough to keep up with clients and for multiple rendering.
----------
there IS a $100 difference between the 770 and 780 BTW-
I am planing on buying my mother a 770 2GB for her pc...assuming she stays 1080p...
The 280x is currently the best price to performance product as it has native 3gb, the gtx 780 is much more expensive and the 770 is well suited for 1440p.
stop it- You think your so damn smart with your "Movie Maker" nonsense.
It's annoying, elitist douche.
I'm not rendering high polygon models, but motion.
The models may be high polygon but generally they are not and have way too much smoothing.,
Most of the people I'll be rendering for use applications that don't make use of workstation graphics anyways...
The primary purpose is video rendering which is the only thing that'll make use of the vram.
fanboys always make me refrain from switching brands
I'm not becoming one of you.
The 280x 6gb gives me the vram I will need and it officially supports up to four in crossfire
unless in gaming but for video and motion...it'll be grand...
The only benefit of a workstation card at this point would be the 10/10/10 bit color. Not needed for most as even the monitors that support it are often not calibrated to be accurate.
so the only benifit would be to use Adobe RGB monitors...ehh...all that'll do is make everything appear muted on standard sRGB monitors...
And the difference between the 280x and the gtx 780 is still over $100
and currently over $180 diff between the 770 and 780.
the 770 and 280x perform the same in games- that doesn't translate to video rendering at all.
unless you have meaningful proof the 3gb 780 is THAT much better than the 6gb 280x, I am taking your words for the smallest grain of salt I can grind.
Just get the 280X.
I'm not a fanboy (in fact I have an nvidia card)
Just go with the 280X and when you need more performance get a second one. If you dont end up getting a second one, just dial the visual settings down (you said you didnt need the max games).
Why do we play games? for the content right? Not for the "visuals".
He has made his decision. Stop arguing, people have been saying 280X since about the first page.

Ughhhhh, if you needed to do some high end rendering them why didn't you mention it earlier?
Can you at least understand why we're frustrated when you keep this kind of actually important information from us?
Up until this page you've ONLY mentioned that you want to play Minecraft at 1440p and maybe a few other games.
Keeping this kind of information to yourself when asking for help with a product that directly affects it is quite frankly, pretty stupid (and not to mention highly annoying for everyone who has been trying to help so far).
At this point I think I'm done. You've obviously decided you need a 6gb 280x so you might as well report your first post to get a mod or admin to lock this thread so that we can all go about our lives with no more posting a d arguing in this thread.
Edit: forgot to mention, quit with the insults too, it's hard to help when you're withholding important information.

I've actually mentioned it quite a few pages ago...

but yes, I am quite content with this...the same card would be fine if the situation didn't change as of late...I just got into an argument about the 770 and price differences...and other nonsense...
Though I have to admit...I *almost chose the 780... but the ram of that new 280x pushed me there...
...
forgot I could edit old posts...I think I will change that and ask to lock...thank you.
