Yes, I have deliberately excluded the power supply and the graphics card because I've already gotten the power supply for my build (OCZ ZT-550), and I'm putting off getting the graphics card until a month or so due to limited funds (I'm considering either an AMD HD 7770 or 7850)
For the time being, I'll be salvaging my nVidia 9500GT from my old machine to use in the new one.
The main question is: Have I picked the right parts? Could I have get something just as good or better for cheaper? Could I have gotten something a lot better for a tiny bit more money? I'm not willing to exceed 400 dollars for this bundle of parts.
For those of you who are curious, I would like to have a machine which can play games like GTA IV, Just Cause 2, Serious Sam 3: BFE, and Saints Row the Third competently.
Phenoms? Dude, that's old tech. If you want to OC, shell a little more money (20 bucks or so) for a FX-4300, or go for an Intel i3 (2100 is good, 3120 better).
Cooler's good, though I heard Thermaltake True Spirit's better.
Mobo is good.
Everything else is good too, with a small note: just get the cheapest optical you can at whatever time you buy it, I assume that's why you picked that one, though.
Any suggestions? Would the motherboard be good for an Ivy Bridge i5 (in case I want to upgrade)?
Upgrading a cpu is probably going to be a ***** to do, I wouldn't even waste the money on a Pentium processor, I guess if your really tight on funds go with an i3 2130 or a fx-4300 like the other guy said. If you can afford an i5, get the i5 3470. It's not great for OCing, but your budget may not be large enough for a good OCing build

You know that the Pentium G860 is the same thing as a Core i3-2100, just without the HyperThreading, right? I'm more concerned about whether I made a good choice about the case and the motherboard.
Do note however, that you won't see much of a performance increase until you upgrade the graphics card. You could upgrade these components now, but there's really not much point either.
I keep on hearing that the FX-4300 doesn't perform any better in gaming than the Phenom II X4 955 BE.
I'd say the FX-4300 would be at least somewhat more future proof, we might see a move to using more than two cores within the lifespan of the computer before it needs some updates (4 years should be enough for a move above two for more than rendering and other intensive programs)
