Ok, so I finished building my computer over the weekend and everything went along fine. Now though I can't get my cd drive to read anything. The thing just doesn't do anything when I open it up and put a cd in and close it. It's really starting to get on my nerves because I already bought Borderlands 2 on disc and I haven't even been able to start it up yet. I was able to install some drivers with the drive already but since sunday it hasn't read anything and I'm really starting to become frustrated. I've tried Microsoft's fixit program and that didn't do anything.
1. For some reason Symantec thinks Microsoft FixIt is a Virus
2. Are you sure your SATA cable is plugged in correctly and securely?
I wouldn't ever install Symantec programs, and I made sure that the SATA cable is plugged in correctly and securely. It was working before on the first two days, but then stopped the next. It hasn't worked since then. When I put a disc in it makes the sound like it is running but only for a second and then quickly stops. After that nothing happens.
Have you tried plugging the other end of the SATA cable into other SATA ports on your motherboard?
Have you tried different SATA cables entirely?
How old is the CD drive in question?
I have tried different SATA cables entirely, but no I haven't tried different Sata ports I will do that after this post. The CD drive is this one: HERE
What exactly happens when you open the tray and put a disc in?
The light should blink and it should spin up.
When I put the disc in the light blinks and the disc spins for a few seconds but not very fast. Almost like it doesn't commit to reading the cd. Then the disc stops spinning and the light goes off.

Sounds like the lasers are dead, or laser if AiO. I had to replace my last DVD/CD drive due to DVD laser died, dual laser. It would absolute not read DVDs, but read CDs fine.
If it is "working" by opening and closing and attempting like its reading. Very well the laser can be dead, or lasers. This is normally what happens with Optical drives in their death.
More so since you have attemped resonable troubleshooting methods.
You can RMA it, but unless newegg/the manufacturer is going to send you a box with postage already paid for don't bother. You'll end up paying 1/3 of the cost of the drive, or more, in shipping/handling (~$7-8 usually).

Tried many discs, none of them working.
Ok, just tried a different SATA port and it still didn't work.
Device manager?
Both recognize the drive and are enabled.
I don't have anything to test it in, but that was something I thought of doing.
