Well not a complete launch the 7970 has hit review sites. The cards won't be on newegg tell next month but it is something to look forward too. Nvidia is a while from its next arch so the next few months will be AMD dominated graphics card wise. So here is some benchmarks the card is supposed to release at 550$
Benchmarks
Gamming
GPGPU processing
Power

Some of those bench marks don't seem accurate. Unless it's a driver issue. Either way I would LOVE to get my hands on a couple of these to replace my 5870's.

It is a brand new architecture and the only driver for it is in beta. There is still half a month between now and when the card releases, there will be a stable release driver hopefully. Also what specific benchmarks look odd to you?
I took a second look at them. Now they make a bit more sense. I did like how the 5870,6970, and 7970 were all clumped together in the power consumption test. Definitely looking forward to seeing CF benchmarks.

Don't buy these, they don't preform better than the 6990, or the Gtx 580.. not worth $550.
the 6990 is a dual card this is not meant to compete with it the 7990 will demolish the 6990. It most situations it is beating the 580gtx. The performance is going to get better on them too once the drivers mature.
I saw it was running Skyrim at 47 FPS with everything Ultra, and I was like "Really? My card does 60..". Then I saw the native screen size, and I got a boner. I don't even have a monitor that would bring that card justice, so I'll stick with my 4870 for now.
I think I'll save up my money for one or two. Maybe two :tongue.gif:
My 5870's are great, but they do stutter a bit on my triple monitor setup.
I don't know what I would do with the old cards though :/
Keep them for spare, or throw them up on ebay/amazon marketplace.
Of course, you will need to make sure that you ship it out as soon as its bought, and you package it correctly (anti static plastic around it, no packing peanuts).
The 5870 is still a great card and almost impossible to find. I might get a good price for them online still.
I doubt it, it consumes a lot more power compared to the 7 series card that will match its performance probably the 7850 will consume a fraction of its power and have the advantage of a better architecture selling them right now wouldn't be hard but in a month it will be.

No the 7970 uses more power than the 5870. The 7970 has a 6 pin and 8 pin power. The 5870 has 2 6 pins, its a very power friendly card for the power it gives.

I'm curious what power consumption will be like on the even higher end cards.
Well we got the dual card and there new zero core is supposed to reduce crossfire power consumption.
Hopefully nvidia does not have any setbacks this card needs a completion product to bring price down and the current expectation from nvidia is late march to get there new cards out. AMD Graphics division seems like the only part of AMD that can release on time.

The 5870 does not compete with the 7970 the 7850 will be in the 5870 performance range. At least that is what my guess will be we gotta wait for the retail release to find out.

At the performance range no. But since they are both the top end single GPU's of their line then I feel you can i some cases. (tomshardware compared them in their 7970 reviw).
Edit: The 5870 actually beat the 6970 and 7970 in DirectComputeBenchmark OpenCL. Link.

As much as I would love to buy one of these my current CPU is holding my 6970 back. That and I need a new cellphone.
I'll stick with the 6000/500 series cards.

I usually give my old cards to friends with crap computers or build a second computer for something like folding@home.
I got one of them when it came out. It was about the same as the 7970 now. Man these are expensive.
