They are going to just be prebuilts coming with Steams OS. They will probably appeal to Console gamers and maybe parents of younger gamers who only want to play Minecraft or something on the TV. Maybe people who are too stupid to realize building PCs is cheaper.
You are never going to see them recommended here we will keep telling people to build their own.
I kind of get Steam Machines, there aren't really any good prebuilt console type PC's (not counting the x51, which is okay but not ideal and definitely not console priced).
But then again, I don't really get why valve wants PC games to be console games.
Still not sure where valve is going with all this.
The idea is to steal some of the console market, I'd imagine.
I can see this being positive for PC gaming, though, along with the architecture changes in the latest gen consoles. PC Gaming might be getting a little more love from the big publishers.
This one is very close to a PC more then a console however.
The Xbox One and Ps4 both use AMD APUs that AMD plans on releasing for other machines. The only advantage the consoles had were a low level API that enabled them to get better graphics performance. AMD announced the same thing for AMD GCN cards. So at this point the consoles are just prebuilts.

Consoles are not PCs, however the new consoles are as close to a PC as a console can get.
In order to be called a "PC" by most people, it will need to allow installation of another OS outside of the console one, and be a multipurpose device, not something just for gaming/entertainment.

But consoles have a firmware OS. That is what sets them apart.
SteamOS is probably just a fork of Ubuntu. It will be very easy to "hack" therefore.

Link.
Here's the steambox everyone has been wishing for.
"Programmers never repeat themselves. They loop."

Like, at all.
Strangely, I felt the same about SteamOS.
"Programmers never repeat themselves. They loop."
So, if I install SteamOS on my computer, and put a Valve sticker on it, do I have a high end Steam Machine?

If they wanted to do that, they wouldn't release SteamOS as open source.

Then they're trying to break into the Ouya market.

Hey everyone, I'm back!

Just saw this after I posted.
I do understand that.
Hey everyone, I'm back!
Storing the OS on flash memory vs the main harddrive is not much of a difference.
No reason for them to base it on Ubuntu there is a better chance it is Debian based.
The OS won't be needing to be "hacked" it is open source and the bootloader is wide open it is probably just Grub.
To steal the population before it begins.
I feel SteamOS is going to be more despised in the Linux community then Ubuntu.
