There's a Windows 8 promotion going on for people who have bought Windows laptops between June 2012 and January 2013. They get to upgrade to Windows 8 for only $15. Now the real question is: Is it worth it? Should I pay $15 to get Windows 8?
It's personal preference. Many people, including me, don't like windows 8, and I'm going to get a new laptop this November, but I'm not upgrading because I don't like it. Some people do like it, and they will upgrade.
Well, only if you like Windows 8's look. It has grown on me to be honest, (my Rainmeter skin is Omnimo, which has a Windows 8 feel and look) and I have heard it is much better performing than Windows 7, as it uses less RAM or something like that.
One of the main reasons I'm asking is because I'm afraid it might be crappy. I remember when people said Windows Vista was the worst OS Microsoft has ever released so maybe it's possible that they'll make the same mistake again.

There's pictures and even a release preview. But be warned, people have said that this is going to be vista all over again.
Metro interface is fine and dandy for tablets and phones but, does NOT belong on a desktop. Bring the start menu back and I will be happy to buy it... else I will keep my XP x64 and spend my cash elsewhere.
Some people like the new interface, some hate it. It's really up to personal preference, which is why I suggested downloading the release preview and taking a look yourself. Although it has been designed for tablet compatibility, they still do have support for keyboard + mouse users.
They pretty much ignored desktop users. They put in a crappy desktop mode which still looks like its on a tablet. I think I'll stick with windows 7. Hopefully, they'll fix this with windows 9.
I don't think it's worth it. Most of what it is, is just a UI change (not sure how much has changed under the hood, I've heard a bit has but still). Basically you'll have to figure out how to use it all over again. There is no start button and the menu is full screen and filled with tiles. You actually spend most of your time on the start menu (the old desktop is actually only there for older applications).
I personally would actually buy it for my gaming PC (however, only if the rumors of it being able to play Xbox360 games are true).
Basically if you're fine with it buy it if not whatever. It's geared towards tablets however (Microsoft wanted to make one OS for desktops and tablets; Windows 8 is what that is). The mouse and keyboard do work fine though. However, when you turn your computer on there's actually a screen you need to drag up to get to the login screen.

As Christoi showed, the only difference is that you start out at the metro style screen before going to the desktop. The only people who are complaining about it being horrible and not for desktop users are the people who haven't tried it.

It has a start menu its just a different style of start menu.
They also edited windows explorer to use the ribbon from MS office 2007 and its quite a bit nicer.
The OS can also mount ISOs without any extra tools and its about dam time.
The other UI changes include a more detailed task manager making the OS more efficient and use less ram and redoing the scheduler to make AMD Bulldozer run faster and mild gains on other computers.

LOL, so Microsoft is promoting piracy??? lolwut????
Edit: Now that I think about it ISO mounters are used for other things...

Since when is .iso mounting piracy? I know plenty of people who store their legitimately acquired DVD and Blu-Ray disks as .isos so they don't even have to leave the couch to pick a movie.

Yeah, I noticed that after I commented... But that's what a lot of people use them for.... Or maybe that's just my friends...
OP, it is your personal preference. I personally would not do it, but to make your decision you should install it in a VM or another machine or something to test it out.
As for the thread, we don't need to get into another "win8 sucks, no it doesn't, yes it does" argument. I'll be making a win8 megathread within the next few days.

Btw, it's legit. I got the link from Windows' official facebook page.
Crap. I wanted the low prices of November. But it's only a month, so wouldn't windows 7 still be the one that's sold with laptops and stuff.
Or is my reasoning just completely absurd?

Of course your needs may be different than mine and Windows 8 might just be right up your alley. It's your own preference really.
To upgrade from windows 7? I think it's like 40$? Don't know why anyone would pay that much for crap like windows 8, but yeah.
What about the full OS itself? If I built a computer myself then wanted Windows 8 on it, how much would it cost?
