You have a point lol i tried teaching my 70 year old grandma how to text the other day and i gave up after an hour. That's good that it was only about 500 i wouldn't buy one but i guess if i had the money i would pay that to keep them out of my hair lol
Nothing wrong with laptops. Depends what it will be used for.
Since the primary purpose of a computer these days seems to be to play games and ****, I can see why a laptop might be considered bad. But I've yet to have a problem with my four year old laptop for dev work. It's slower than my desktop, of course, but it's good because it's more "average spec" so gives me a good platform to test on.
Also it works well as a LAMP server.
As for Why Macintosh Computers are an awful choice:
1. Overpriced. No. You aren't paying for higher quality components. The internal components are the same as you'd find on a mid-range computer, they just stick it in a glossy case and slap a Apple logo on it.
2. PCs are more upgradable- and those upgrades cost far less. You want to upgrade your PC, you simply find a replacement part from a wide selection of standard architectures. You don't need to make special considerations because you have a Dell or an HP; industry standards, biatch. The Mac has expansions, but if you want to keep under their strict warranty you need to get it from Apple who will, again, charge a premium for adding a sticker to the product.
3. AAC and MP3s suck.
OK, so I mean, of course you can play other file formats on a Mac, but if you are the type of person who wouldn't use iTunes on a Mac, it's unlikely you would be dumb enough to buy a Mac in the first place.
4. They look stupid.
OK, so this is more subjective. But if I buy a computer, I want it to look like a computer, not a glossy mass you might pull out of grandma's candy dish when you visit. Of course if the purpose of buying a computer is to suit some interior design goal, than by all means, but if you are in fact in the market for function rather than form (which is typically what smart people are after) than it leaves a bit to be desired.
I think at this point, the biggest problem with Macintosh Computers is they are no longer even really different from PCs. essentially, what you are paying for is re-cased PC hardware with a special (as in- "needs help to pee" special) BS-based OS installed. That's it.
Also, to the people who think Macs are meant for things like work, video/photo editing, your wrong.
For the price of a MacBook Pro, you could get a nice HP/Asus/Toshiba/Lenovo with a beast mobile i7 a dedicated GPU, more RAM for cheaper, yet also being able to render videos faster and play games better, for cheaper. (Saving you around $1,000)
Both brands sell a name more than anything else, but at least Alienware offers closer to reasonable prices, Windows OS (so you can actually game), and better upgrade-ability for when it finally starts to become obsolete. Apple is almost criminal in their prices.
Oh, and there's definitely an Alienware ad on the reply page.

Eh, placing ads like that on here that tempt people to click them is a source of income for the admin on this site. Basically, Alienware or what ever other company who wants to advertise, pays Google to advertise their ads on websites, blogs, YouTube, etc.. And when people simply just click the ads to view it, the admin or whoever gets money.
I know, since my YouTube account is enabled for Monetisation. Which is basically what the above is.
Yeah, i use a mac. best choice ever. People say pcs are more customizable which they are but think of it like this. You can upgrade the hard drive and ram on both. Yeah you cant get a new processor or video card but in my opinion, you should be able to use the same one for 5 or 6 years and by then, it would be time to get a new computer anyways. For Os customization, yeah you can change all of these crazy things on windows like themes and cursor and drivers and on and on but is it really necessary? on my mac, i dont need to spend time changing settings to make it work the way i want it to, it just works. Yes i know how to use a computer much more than the average person very well but i dont want to waste time making it work the way i want it to, i shouldn't have to either. then there are the specs. Yeah my computer isnt the best thing i could have bought with my money, i know i could have build one and i thought about it for a few months but decided against it. My specs are.:
2.5 ghz dual core intel i5
4gb ddr3 ram
Radeon HD 6630M 256 graphics card
500gb hard drive
yet in bootcamp (windows) on it i can run skyrim on high settings without lag. it runs fine. The mac OS is very nice IMO. it has a lot of multitasking features built in such as expose which lets you see all of your open windows easily, mission control which lets you have multiple desktops like linux, and dashboard which you can put simple apps such as a calandar and calculator on and easily access with f12. OSX also comes with great programs such as Imovie and Garageband. Imovie is without a doubt much better than Windows Movie Maker and Garageband is 1000 times better than sound recorder. best of all, OS upgrades are only 30 bucks and there is a convenient app store to buy programs. Finally, to the guy who said AAC's and Mp3's suck, i know they do. flac all the way! if you have anything else to argue about, bring it on.

Um, 5-6 years it will be useless. Like utter useless. My grandpa's old mac from about 6 years ago lags when playing youtube videos, no joke. It is just not even worth it. The highest of the high top end hardware from 6 years ago might be able to run CoD. On low settings.
Laptops are baaad, mkay.
$500 more than the dell, not $500 total.
How was that helpful? Laptops have their uses and reasons. Not everyone is a hardcore gamer.
i5 6600k 4.6ghz / MSI 280X / 8Gb 2666 DDR4 / Gigabyte Z170X-UD5 / TX550M / 500Gb 850 EVO / NZXT S340 / Corsair K65 / Corsair M60
Not really.
Just pack up a desktop in a suitcase. It is travel friendly and efficient!
Ohh i read that wrong lol well i guess if you have the money why not but i would have rather tried to teach her and spend that extra 500$ on my rig.
Laptops are fine for the average person that wants a mobile computing device. Not really cost effective for a gamer though.

Indeed.. the stupidity is growing at an alarming pace
