Hello. i am saving up to build a computer and i do a lot of gaming programming and 3D design is the i7 2600k better for the price or should i get a i5 2500k
Hyper-threading is useful for 3D work so I would get the 2600k and overclock it a bit. That or you could wait for Ivy Bridge in a few months and overclock even more.
Well, if the extra 100 bucks is in your budget go for it, the i5 is a perfectly good processor to use, I play a mass variety of games with mine including Battlefield 3, and Skyrim.
If I can find the article but compiling code with hyperthreading on was showing about a 33% increase in computing power.
Compiling large projects can take a long time. A 33% increase is massive for 100$ if its for your job and you need the compiling to go quickly.

Ok cool i might just get the i5 cause its alot cheaper
This.
As to whether or not it is really worth an extra $100-130? No, not really. Unless it is your job, you should stick with an i5.
It is you who needs to do research.
Hyperthreading has been shown to speed up 3D rendering.
By what? 1/8th of an eye blink?
Combined with CUDA it's actually a very noticeable difference in long renders.
You realize rendering a still image can take upwards of a few hours, and rendering a video can take upwards of a few days right?
Shaving off even just 5-10% off that is more than worth it if you do this kind of thing for a living.
If you got the money, go for it, not worth it to me..
Yup 1/8th of a second or how about almost 10 mins.
That's quite nice indeed.
Well yes that's what we said....
3.3Gz to 3.4Gz? For 100 bucks.
The hyperthreading alone account for around 5% increase (which can be some time on large renders).
That combined with the higher clock speeds and higher binning of the 2600K's allowing for higher OCs it makes quite a difference.
GHz means next to nothing when choosing a processor, especially if it is unlocked.

Yes, which is exactly what we said.
