I see that most people in the us have a 1:1 ratio of download to upload, for example, 20mbits/sec to 20mbits/sec. In Canada, where I live, this is entirely different. Downloads speeds are extremely fast compared to us (my connection once got 96mbits/sec, average about 70), but uploads are horribly slow (1mbit/sec). It's not just my ISP, I looked at different ones, they are the same. Can anyone else living in Canada post their speeds?
I'm not complaining or anything, I just noticed it while browsing these forums, and I thought it would be a good discussion topic.

I think you're over exaggerating.
It's usually a 10:3 ratio, eg: 20 down 3 up. Comcast maxes at 20/3 at the moment (for $190/mo since you are forced into their cable/phone bundle, just internet is $240 depending on where you live) and FiOS maxes at 55/25 (similar price as comcast but MUCH MUCH better service). Almost nowhere gets FiOS though. Otherwise your only options are DSL @ ~5 down and 0.1 up or less (Usually around $50/mo).
It's nowhere near as good as you think it is. We rank 38th in internet speeds worldwide with Korea being first (1.5-2Gbps up and down for $19/mo) next to Hong Kong(similar speeds and prices) and Japan (again, similar speeds & prices). We are behind Romania of all countries.
You are SOL in canada, your internet infastrucutre is much worse than it is down here, and it's pretty bad down here. If you can't find any other options, then what you did find is what you are stuck with.

Yeah, I've heard network prices (mobile too) are much cheaper in Europe.
Lol, my parents are from romania. Don't worry though, I'm not insulted, I know it sucks there.
However, how is it that even mobile 3G gets higher upload speeds than freakin cable?
I get cable Internet from Rogers right now (pretty much AT&T in the us) with the speeds posted above.
However, I don't have the absolute fastest speeds in canada. I do live in the most populated part of Canada (Toronto, Ontario). I have the highest dl speeds in canada, but not the fastest upload. Fastest upload I've seen is 5 mbits/sec, but that costs 95$ a month. My current cable costs 65$ a monthWait, 1.5 Gbps PER SECOND IN KOREA OF ALL COUNTRIES?! I UNDERSTAND JAPAN, but...
People must start screaming at the American and Canadian governments to upgrade infrastructure...

I don't know where you get your information, but I have never heard of 1:1 download/upload speeds. I've had numerous ISP's and they've all been like 4:1 download to upload. Currently with Cox, I have 2.5 MBS download speed and a paltry 850 KBS upload speed. It's definitely gotten better over the years though, the last ISP I had with ATT was less than 1 MBS and upload was 128 KBS.
That's Megabytes I'm using, not Megabits, man I hate megabits....
Yeah, I've heard network prices (mobile too) are much cheaper in Europe.
They are middle ground between our speeds and East Asian speeds. Except their price scales lower, so the services are cheaper.
Lol, my parents are from romania. Don't worry though, I'm not insulted, I know it sucks there.
IIRC they just rolled out 100Mbps internet for cheap nationwide. :sad.gif:
However, how is it that even mobile 3G gets higher upload speeds than freakin cable?
"3G/4G" is a scam, as it does not accurately represent much of anything. In terms of the speeds you get, it depends on the load of the cell tower and how close you are, there are so many variables.

That's about what you are stuck with. My Canadian friends room together and split the $95/mo bill evenly since it is the best available.
Upload is ALWAYS capped. Always. It is also very heavily throttled. In off peak hours you might get higher speeds but between 2PM and 2AM almost every ISP in canada and the US throttles your speeds to a certain amount. They claim it's to reduce load for other people and so you aren't clogging the system but that's all BS. Anyone with a basic understanding of how DOCSIS and the like work could tell you that.
Wait, 1.5 Gbps PER SECOND IN KOREA OF ALL COUNTRIES?! I UNDERSTAND JAPAN, but...
Only hong kong (mostly) for china but yes, the entire country for the most part in terms of Japan/S. Korea. This alone should tell you how ridiculously behind we are in internet speeds.
People must start screaming at the American and Canadian governments to upgrade infrastructure...
Not really, because they aren't throttled to absurdly low levels, they have fairly low pings to other countries and can download at said country's 100% upload speed. So essentially even though they arent on mainland US they can get the same speeds on websites for downloading things as we do. (S.Korea kind of needed the speeds and low pings though, I mean, Starcraft IS a national sport...)
It's a shame it's gotten to this point really. Telecom companies were given billions in the 90s (and more billions this year) to roll fiber out across the US, they rolled out about 3% of it then pocketed the rest of the money. The fiber that IS laid is currently dark and unused, and has been since it was put there.
I'm not sure what carriers Canada got but Verizon 4G gets low enough pings and speeds to play battlefield 3 online.
4G will replace landlines in most of the USA and canada and any large country. I expect im paying 60$ a month just to get .
Comapred to the 20$ a month I get unlimited 4G with verizon. Tho there is no 4G in my area yet.
3G speeds indoors droidx with cyanogen. 4-5 bars.
Speeds you can expect at least what Ive seen in most areas is 22mbits down and 10 up.
LTE right now can get up to down-link peak rates of 300 Mbit/s, uplink peak rates of 75 Mbit/s.
When Verizon rolls out LTE advance it can do 1gigbit/s.

Well, we have to make compromises, at least we have a house and electricity and no radiation...
And no risk of our countries running bankrupt lol (ahem Greece)

It's also probably cheaper. 4G data plan with 2GB allowance is like 80$ CAD a month

Verizon is doing a good pretty good they plan to cover all 3g areas by late 2013.
I am going to have to call BS on that claim, majority of the 3G area is owned by AT&T, and AT&T has no plans on upgrading anything on their infrastructure (as we can plainly see in cities like NY and LA where they need to deploy those mobile cell tower trucks).
It's an extremely hefty claim to make, to the point almost where it's laughable. ESPECIALLY by 2013, are you kidding me?

at&t service is laughable at best.
They don't even cover voice or texting in kansas period when family comes out here they are lucky if they get 1 bar.

Plans are underway to cover 200 million people by the end of 2011 and the entire nation with more 4G coverage than 3G coverage by the end of 2013. That will mean coverage for 98% of the country.
Verizon already has pretty good 4g service they are rolling out a lot faster than any other carrier in the USA.

I get 30 down and 3 up.
Hmm... Maybe I've observed unique cases? I don't know...
But to the people with 20 upload, I am so jelly lol (I upload vids on a regular basis)
