"I hate rap, I'd rather listen to my indie punk alternative band because their lyrics are meaningful"
It's fine if you like that music, but don't pretend your music is somehow better because it's emotional. I personally don't really care if a song is emotional. If it sounds good, I'll enjoy it. Anything from AC/DC and Warrant all the way to Tupac and Biggie. I understand that people just plain don't have the taste for certain genres of music, for example I absolutely cannot enjoy screamo because of the singing. But to pretend your music is somehow better because it has a deep emotional meaning is ridiculous. Some people listen to music for that, other people not so much. Taste in music is subjective.
Also, somewhat related, stop with the idiotic assumptions that all rap is about hookers and money. Sure a lot is, I'll be the first to say that there are a lot of horrendously bad rap artists out there. But I'll also be the first to say, there are rappers (like Tupac) that have several songs just as "deep" if not more so than your "super emotional indie underground postcore alternative band."
Welcome to my signature! I'm on the forums almost everyday (even if its just for a few minutes) So if you have something to tell me or tell me about, just send me a PM (private message) Note- I do not usually check the places I post to see if there are replies, so the above applies. ~Notch
I disagree in part. Saying a song, like any work of art, is more emotional and therefore superior to another is a perfectly valid assessment. Although this has absolutely nothing to do with the genre; plenty of rap is very emotional, so I agree that the hypothetical quote is ridiculous.

How so? Is the purpose of music to "be emotional"? Do we measure the quality of music via how many tears you cry when you listen to it?
It's one thing to just plain be in the mood for "emotional" music sometimes. In that moment, maybe you are thinking you'd rather listen to a sad song. But it's another to claim that any song that is emotional is far better than ones that aren't. Like I said, some people listen to music for some emotional journey, others listen to music because it sounds good and it entertains them.
Where you might listen to a song and think "wow, those lyrics are so deep. I love this song," others might think "I don't like this song. I listen to music for good sounds, not some sob story from a singer." I personally tend to lean towards the latter most of the time. I want to listen to rock n' roll because it just plain has an appealing sound to it. I want to jam out and enjoy the music. I'm not interested in reflecting on my personal emotional journey via music, that's not why I listen to it.
So to pretend music is objectively better because of your subjective taste in songs is not a valid assessment.

Sorry, I wasn't saying emotional appeal is the only way to measure a song's quality, but just that it's one way, and a perfectly valid way. If a song manages to get an emotional response then that is an achievement for the musician. Though, even if this didn't come across in my first post, I do agree that this is far from the only way to judge music; a song being well constructed, original-sounding and simply being enjoyable to listen to are all equally valid measures of quality.

What about if a song generates feelings of rage to shoot the guy who made the song because it is so awful?

But that's purely subjective. It's not like there's one sure-fire way to get everyone to 'feel'. What make you cream yourself might just make someone else bored.
The whole point of what he's saying is to keep in mind that your personal tastes or opinions hold no ground when it comes to another individual. There's no such thing as 'objective' taste.

I know this, this has already been said. I know art is subjective, but that doesn't mean something can't be praised a subjective trait, no assessment of a song is ever right; what one person considers great composition might be terrible to another, so why is this any different?

Making a song that bad takes real talent, so... um, sort of, I guess.

If the music sounds good, It is good imo
Although lyrics do play some part to be honest.
I cant listen to a song that literally is stupid to the core.
If the lyrics we're repetitively Potato I'd probably end up liking it just because of my awry sense of humor.

Meh. I dont even care for any. I do not like singing, it makes music into songs. Music that is relaxing (Chinese, Japan, ect.) and ancient stuff ofc, not Gangnam Style. It relaxes me, and so I like it better. I personally have a love for Minecraft music because it soothes me.

Singing is music. From google (oxford dictionary): "vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion." So, while you may not enjoy the singing, and while music in general is subjective, singing is not necessarily defined as a different form of art. It is considered a form of music.

Singing is music. I never said it wasn't. Music is not singing, therefore not a song.

Music was made to entertain and strengthen social bonds in prehistoric times. Music stimulates the brain. Music is not made to fight over. It was made to applaud and celebrate.

If you like more laid-back rap, listen to The Pharcyde or Mos Def. If you like more lively rap, try listening to some Slick Rick.

When I think of music that's emotional, it's passionate, deep, and complex, and it stirs my own emotions.
Wow what a pretentious opinion.
You're so deep.
