This has been on my chest for awhile, so I want to get it off now.
For quite awhile, most of you have watched Adventure Time, thinking it to be a happy, fun show.
Yeah, who wouldn't?
Cutest thing ever, i know.
But anyway, lets get straight to the first part of why this is such an incredibly sad show.
First off, you've all seen the opening sequence, correct?
Take another look at the first frame.
We've got Alot of hollow, petrified trees, trash everywhere, and Nukes implanted into the scene.
This will explain some later points, but for now, the inclusion of nukes is pretty weird, right?
lets take a bigger look at the land of Ooo.
Again, odd that there would be a giant hole in the side of the land of Ooo. that, and it looks like it was blasted.
the thing that really brings it all together is "The great Mushroom war"
The mushroom war is the cause of the post apocalyptic condition of the land of Ooo.
There's not too much info on it ATM, but what we do know, counts.
i would say that the mushroom war was started by mankind, and can also be inferred that it brought about the end of the world. (also possibly creating the Lich.)
the only two survivors to this would be the ice king, and Marceline.
in the episode "Finn the Human", Marceline does state that the mushroom bomb was dropped 1000 years ago, and if Marceline is 1000 years old, that would mean the bomb would have also been dropped 1000 years prior to these events.
lets also not forget there was a reference to the old world in "video makers", where Finn and Jake discover government copyrights on the old videos.
Lets move on to why as the ice king is involved in this.
The ice king himself was actually a human, and that human's name was Simon Petrikov.
he discovered the ice king's crown way back, and put it on to amuse his wife.
eventually he started losing his mind, and lost his wife.
He did find Marceline crying after the war, however, and they shared a bit of a moment, which lead to the episode "I remember you"
The lyrics they sang were a note from former simon petrikov to Marceline talking about how he'll still be there, but his mind will be lost.
We also see more of simon petrikov in "holly jolly secrets I", where we can see a human ice king (simon) in the video living in what appears to be civilization.
Although in a scene from "i remember you" Finn the human is also shown as a little boy and Susan strong is there too, meaning a small amount of humans could have survived, Finn WAS found to be abandoned on a hill, in a later episode.
Speaking of Susan strong, i would also gander a guess at her and the tribe of hyoomuns in..well.. "Susan strong", that they are somewhat mutated, but still mostly human, this can be kind of seen as Susan strong speaks very slowly at first, and has problems with sentencing.
So, there you have it.
Incredibly sad back story of nuclear apocalypse and the survivors being Marceline, Finn the human, the Ice king and Susan strong.
Technically Simon petrikov, but we all know his mind was taken over by the crown.
I need to save you, but who will save me
Forgive me for whatever I do, When I don't remember you
There you have it. That's why adventure time is so incredibly sad.
I thought this was old news. And it's not really that sad, tbh.
Despite any hidden backstory this show has, it's still just a goofy kids cartoon that isn't meant to be taken this seriously.
Adventure Time has a setting like that so that it can't run out of plotline. They can always use references to the great Mushroo, war? Make episodes based off of it? With this content, Adventure Time could easily go for a Sixth Season, or more.

What does that have to do with anything?
They don't write episodes based on a post-apocalyptic setting. They write them based on whatever goofy little thing pops into their heads, and then add tiny references to a "great mushroom war". This show really isn't as deep as people make it out to be.

Actually there are a few episodes that are entirely focused on the Great Mushroom War.
"Finn the Human" and "Jake the Dog",2 separate episodes rolled up into one special, are based on the Mushroom War (Finn's wish world,of course).
"I remember you" is also a good example of an episode that is focused on the Great Mushroom War. Marceline and Simon (Ice King) make music about their lives during/in the aftermath of the Mushroom War,using old letter/notes.
So the post-apocalypse setting is exactly what this entire show is about. A young boy, named Finn, presumably the only human left in existence, and Jake the Magical Dog,with the ability to stretch his entire body to different sizes, go on adventures. However, the other characters (including Jake) are however, mutated creatures from the aftermath of the nuclear waste.
So as you see,the entire show is based off the Post-Apocalypse setting of the Great Mushroom War.

The shows creator has stated many times that he wanted to make a show adults could enjoy and kids could grow into. The back story is just as important as anything else in the show and is given as much care and effort.
It's fairly obvious at this point if you watch the show that Pendleton Ward is going to continue fleshing out the period before the war. True, it will never be totally about that, but it's at least 50% part of the show right now.
To be honest it just sounds like you don't like the show.
Which is okay.
But you also seem to be trying to come up with quantifiable reasons why fans of it shouldn't enjoy it as much/or a certain way.
Which really isn't okay.
Also to the person asking about the ice king/crown paradox, the crown doesn't have a formal name(yet). It's just a cursed relic that grants whoever wears it abilities such as flight, and multitudes of ice powers. It also makes their hair grow out, even changing their voice,(as we saw in Jake The Dog when Finn puts the crown on) essentially twisting the wearer into the crowns own visage.
"Ice King" is just the name everyone has given the monster Simon has turned into.
Mutation due to rolling in the "Mud" (In case you didn't know, it was affected by the nuke bombs)
Yep, As Jay Said He Was Just A Puppy So The Nuclear Waste Was Maybe Like Mud For Him, And He Still Thinking That Until He Grown Up Because He Never Knew About What Was The Nuclear Energy Or The History Of OOO. And For Those That Saw "The Vault " Candy Kingdom Was Build Over A Nuclear Waste River So How Can We Know That All The Contamination Of OOO Already Dissapeared Making The Theory Of The True Origin Of Jake`s Powers More Credible.
