Eragon series is really awesome if you're into that sort of things (Dragons, etc).
The Eragon series is pretty poorly done and not very original, and being written by a 15-year-old author, it offends me, a 15-year-old author.
I'd suggest The Outsiders. It's not the most interesting book, but it's much better than Eragon and written by a 15-year-old author who isn't a disgrace to us all.
Edit: Also, I didn't really like Ender's Game. I don't know why everybody keeps suggesting it to me.
I haven't read it myself so I can't vouch for how good it is but I'm planning on doing it eventually.
I can't stand that book. It isn't because of the whole sensationalist aspect of it (I'm generally good with disturbing stuff), I just thought it was ****ing depressing. It turned me off Nabokov, as well.

I would go for Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians.
Hear me out before you discount it as a 'kiddie' book, it's a Brandon Sanderson novel (but not as thick, don't worry), and immensely funny. I have been reading the series lately and have enjoyed it a lot. If you're into a fantasy kinda thing (not really sure how to explain it, fantasy seems to fit best...), then go for it.
Drop Into Hell, if you want to read about paratroopers on D-Day.
My favorite is definitely the Hunger Games. Also, try some of Michael Palmers's books if you want medical books that are actually medically accurate, compared to shows like House that don't know what the hell they are talking about.

I'm always happy just 'cause there isn't a reason to be sad.
Don't take this as there is nothing that could cause sadness. I just mean it's pointless to dwell on it. I mean, depression is so boring.
If you are over 21, I recommend the series 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. Its got everything dark and dreary in political/royalty structure.
If you like adventure, I recommend Harry Potter book series.
How good is that book? I was going to read it for a Independent reading project at school but I wasn't too sure about it. I love politics though so I though I might like it.

I can
Start with Homeland by R. A. Salvatore. There are around 30 books in the series.
If Sci-Fi:
Ender's Game, Dune, anything by Jack McDevitt
If classic:
Lord of the Flies
If really long drawn out though mildly believable pseudo-fantasy narrative:
The Black Company

oh, well there you go Shortanimationz, it's good! A person on Minecraftforum said so themselves.
Star Wars with dragons.
I had hoped the author would try to create an original plot, but he just kept following star wars.
It's still a great read. I'm currently on Brisingr.
