That's hard to say. I've read a lot of great books.
One of my personal favorites is Arthus Mervyn; or, the Memoirs of the Year 1793 by Charles Brockden Brown. Everything from its playful and eloquent language, it's naive yet intelligent main character, to its examination of sickness, health, and knowledge make it a fantastic read for those with a good taste in literature.
"For I am a sinner in the hands of an angry God. Bloody Mary, full of vodka, blessed are you among cocktails. Pray for me now and at the hour of my death, which I hope is soon. Amen." - Sterling Archer, aka "Duchess", aka "world's most dangerous spy".
I've read so many good books, don't make me choose!
My top three categories, however, would be (in no particular order)
1) Books by Steve Berry. They're Clive Cussler-esque.
2) Hercule Poirot mysteries. Come on, he's the only fictional character to get an obituary in the New York Times.
3) The Ring of Fire series by Eric Flint&others
The best book I've ever read is probably Breathless. I don't remember who the author is, though. The Faerie Path Series is a really good series, but you have to get into it. Another good series is the GONE series by Michael Grant.

I would tell you about how awesome I am down here, but I have a feeling you probably already know that. <- Please. ._.
My favorite book is probably The Jungle, but Upton Sinclair. Not exactly the best writing (All the paragraphs are basically huge walls o' text), but its political and social significance remain as important today as in 1906 (if not more important).
The Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, and Maximum Ride series round out the list. (Think young! You'll live longer!)
Way too many to list. I've ran out of good literature to read, everything I'm finding nowadays isn't interesting to me.
Even a shortened list would take a long time to write. I have so many favorites...
If I had to pick something that I like the most, I'd nominate the Inheritance Cycle (series). It's a difficult choice, but I think that series is my favorite of them all, although the Star Wars Expanded Universe books could be a close second (mostly because I've read more more than 100 of the SWEU books).

Battle Royale is also a very good book. Much better than the Hunger Games series.
